Tax credits whilst studying

Hi,

I am thinking of doing a PGCE next year.

I will not be working (but will have the bursary which is non taxable).

Will I be eligible for Tax credits. The hmrc website says yes as long as I have childcare provider....but the final amount is more than my childcare costs....so what about if I don't have childcare?

You can still get child tax credits, not working tax credits though. The bursary is not classed as income with regards to tax credits, housing benefit class it as income though. Your best bet is to try for the graduate teacher programme or something that gives you an income rather then a bursary. As an unqualified teacher you can earn 14k.

I will get more(or at worst the same) doing a PGCE for my subject than GTP

You need to sit and calculate the difference.
