Teachers' maternity pay

Can someone help me understand maternity pay for teachers please? I'm desparate to thinking about ttc but DH as usual wants to know every possible impact before even considering it. I've been trying to make sense of the "burgundy book" but getting in a real pickle with all the exceptions and examples so am no wiser.

In particular how does holiday fit in. I think that in a "normal" job where you accrue holiday you are still entitled to paid holiday? So how does it work in teaching when there are fixed holidays? Do they just not count? What if I had the baby in the school holidays - would maternity leave start from when it was born or when the next term started? And how much impact does my salary have on maternity pay? I'm going onto M6 (+fringe) in September but thinking about going for AST status this year. Would I lose loads in maternity pay if I gave the AST a miss unless or until I returned to work post-maternity.

The holidays don't count, so it makes no difference if your baby is born in term time or holiday. You can't start a maternity leave after the birth of the baby, so for example, if your baby was born in August, you couldn't start your ML in Sept

Holidays don't count, in that you can't accrue them. There is some ruling passed by the European union that might change this, but since it will cost a small fortune to implement I can't see it happening.

Your mat leave starts whenever you want it to, earliest is 11 weeks prior to est. due date and up to the day of birth. So if your edd was 30th August, you could reasonably work up to the end of term, start the hols and give your day of delivery as the start of mat leave.

You can have up to a yr off, 9m of that is paid in some form.

Your local authority might offer an enhanced maternity leave package though. I know Surrey do, it is better than that laid out in the Burgandy Book. Ask your Union? if you don't want anyone at school to know about the TTC.

Thanks all!
I'm working on convincing DH that it won't necessarily be as um precise as he thinks it should be. I get the feeling he's get some date in October marked for TTC sex and that'll be that!
Speaking to Union is a good idea thanks. I'm in Herts if anyone has any specific knowledge of there.
