Home Insurance - paying the excess before the assesment - is that usual?

I just wondered. Due to a water tank leakage incident theres some problems with the flooring upstairs which needs investigating to see if we need any work done.

So phoned up the insurance company to ask if we're covered for any damage. We are, but have a £150 excess. Fine. I need an assessment as I said ( to me it looks like we might just need the floor to dry out, not work done, but I'm no expert) and they said they'd get their people onto it, i.e. a carpet firm that does this stuff for them.

That company wants the excess upfront before they do the assessment. I phoned the insurance company back to ask if that was normal, and they said yes, it would be refunded if no work was needed or if I didnt want to continue with the claim.

DH is having kittens about it, but I'm not that worried as long as they do refund it in the case where I dont need work done.

So does anyone else have experience of paying the excess just to get an assessment done?

thanks

The excess came off the amount paid afair when we had problems. We didn't pay up front.
