Will we get tax credits?

herewegoagainxyz · 16/07/2010 14:07

My dh is likely to be made redundant any day soon. He'll probably get a year's basic, but no bonuses, so around £100k lump sum.

Our mortgage is nowpaid off & I work part time. I reckon our bills, running cars, food etc will be about ££2,400 per month, which leaves a shortfall between that and my income of around £850 per month. We'll have to dip into the lump sum for that (it will, in theory, last us a good few years so if dh doesn't find anything else, by that time he'll be close to taking his pension (at 60).

Soooo, I realise we won't get tax credits straight away as last year dh earned £180k, but will we get them after he's been on JSA for a year?

Also, and I'm really really hoping the answer is no, will the fact that we have redundancy money stashed away mean that we'll never be entitiled to tax credits?

I did say that in my OP.

I dont see why people are having a go to be honest surely herewego is just working out how to support her family in a difficult situation. Just because it is not as difficult as other people does not mean that it is difficult to her.

Hope your dh finds another job soon herewego and be pleased that you dont have a mortgage to worry about on top!

bubbles4 · 16/07/2010 20:38

So you want to become one of the leeches that claim tax credits?

usualsuspect · 16/07/2010 20:43

I would quite like a difficult situation that included 100k in the bank

coolma · 16/07/2010 20:45

'leeching' tax credits? I have never joined a thread like this before but really, what a vile thing to say.

First of all, he'll only be on JSA for six months. After that, it becomes income-based. He doesn't qualify for that.

Secondly, I suggest you re-work that budget in case he doesn't get another job paying so soon.

Thirdly, I wouldn't count on getting tax credits even if I were earning £25,000 in the next, oh, three years.

I wouldn't be surprised if they don't go the way of the dodo bird in the name of austerity.

at least I'm not claiming housing benefits.

What a vile stuck up person you are. Have fun making your £100k last

KickArseQueen · 16/07/2010 23:28

My outgoings is less than that with a mortgage and 4 kids!!!!! !

AND!!!! If I', right they are going to reduce my TC.

I'm really sorry that your DP has lost his job, but TC are not there to support your lifestyle, they are there to help you survive!

expatinscotland · 17/07/2010 01:03

Oh, yes, magnolia, we're an 'entitled' lot, aren't we?

FFS.

Benefits are means-tested for a reason.

I think they should all be, down to those free bus passes my old landlord on more than we'll ever see in a year gets.

'We paid for everyone else.'

Thanks. And bullshit. We pay proportionally more, as these peon 'low-earners' on £16K.

But keep telling yourself otherwise.

I agree with mosschops.

expatinscotland · 17/07/2010 01:12

No way, Stewies! Surely that is up to serfs like me and DH to tend the garden. There could be jaggies and weeds and beasties in there.

I'll never forget going to see a pal in an area of Edinburgh with which DH was unfamiliar. 'I dunnae ken this place,' said the Leither with the dockman father and Newhaven fisherman's daughter for a mother.

We got lost, in our 1997 Vauxhall Astra.

Turns out we were in The Grange.

But anyhoo, we saw a man trimming a high hedge, you couldn't see any houses from the road, so I told DH to stop and get out and speak to the man.

He came back chuckling.

'Did you find out where to go?' I said.

'Aye. But when I approached the fella he asked if I were here for the gardening job. I asked why. He said, 'The only folk with that kind of accent are staff, man.''

You want to know what I said in return?

'Does the job come with tied accommodation?'

His laugh rang out over the Pentlands.

Would you like to rephrase that? Hundreds of thousands of families on a low working wage claim tax credits, and they serve their purpose, which is to lift those families out of the poverty that their wage would bring.

coolma · 17/07/2010 10:27

Exactly, phrases that like that make me quite sick. However, clearly the OP is the only one who has ever 'paid' for these nasty working class leeches.

I get it. Now that OP has found out they won't be entitled to any tax credits, she has decided that anyone who claims them are "leeches".

I bet you wouldn't be saying that if you were entitled to tax credits, OP.

I wish dp and I earned enough so we could have a spare £350 a month. Oh, and no I don't get tax credits or housing benefit before you start calling me a "leech" or any other choice phrase OP.

Quality · 17/07/2010 11:04

at expat

MassiveBumperlicious · 17/07/2010 12:03

This OP is delusional? Also, on what planet does she think she will get £401 back a month? We are on a joint income of 30k and get about that in a years worth of tax credits.

Benefits are for those in need. I think someone with no mortgage, 100k in the bank and who is budgeting £600 a month for holidays, unforeseen expenses and birthdays is not someone who is in need.

And now she is calling those of us who do claim tax credits because we are on about a quarter of her income 'leeches'? Astounding really.

Not my words but the op,s who stated that we were leeching tax credits,I just asked if she wanted to become one of those.

HmmmIwonder · 18/07/2010 16:42

herewegoagainxyz - it's all a JOKE! Honestly, this person could NOT be for real! But it's the funniest thread I've seen for a long time, so well done herewegoagainxyz !

HmmmIwonder · 18/07/2010 16:45

You can tell herewegoagainxyz isn't real because there's no such verb as 'to leech'. If she was real, and was as rich as she claims to be, she would've gone to a posh school where they'd teach her proper grammar

coolma · 18/07/2010 16:48

Unless her old man is a 'self made' millwionaire from the working classes himself??

Concordia · 18/07/2010 17:02

actually, your cars are costing you a fortune per month, in tax and repairs.
use your big payout to get smaller, more economical new ones with a long warranty.
that will save you money.
it is hard to adjust to earning less.
but on what you have you will definitely have enough to meet your needs.

em83 · 19/07/2010 16:33

is this a wind up or what ???

take a look at the "are you secretely poor" thread , there are people on there who cant afford to feed themselves let alone pay for meals out and save for birthdays etc !
you ought to think yourself extremely lucky that your other half is expecting a £100k payout...
imo you DONT need to be claiming tax credits
