EMA

Basically, about to claim son's EMA for a 2yr course...and looks like he will only get the £10 pw...as based on tax year 09/10

However THIS tax year (10/11) my husband has gone self employed and likely to have drop in income due to set up costs etc....

So...can EMA be recalulated when income drops...or are we best to wait till next april, and then apply using lower income?

(sounds very negative...ofcourse i hope my DH earns loads...and his income increases!!!!)

EMA may be scrapped very soon anyway. Lots of cuts happening at the moment in education.

When do you think we will know if it is being cut mizu?

tellmewhy · 15/07/2010 16:02

EMA isn't being scraped has far as i know. There was no mention of them scaping it in the buget. My DD as just had her award come through for when she starts september.I think you can ask for it to be recalulated next year but not part the way through a year.

Monty100 · 15/07/2010 16:11

MrsF, I was late for applying for dd's and they didn't backdate it.

bytheMoonlight · 15/07/2010 19:40

I think I read that it didn't have to mentioned in the budget in order for it to be scrapped

MrsForgetful · 15/07/2010 19:44

thanks all...sounds like should get on and apply now...incase its withdrawn!!!

Don't know, sorry. Just have been hearing lots of rumours around the staffroom. A lot of people think it will be things like that cut first. But if people have already had awards come through for September then maybe it will be next year.

cleverlyconcealed · 15/07/2010 19:52

Yes apply now MrsF - not sure if you can ask to be assessed on current income - give them a call.

I wonder if it will be scrapped when they make education/training compulsory to 18? EMA was originally mean't to encourage young people to stay on in education; once it's complusory they're won't be a need for encouragement.

Mrs F, hope it comes through for you ok. Sorry for quickie hijack, does anyone know if you have to reapply for the second year of 6th form?
