Ok got a letter today saying we have been overpaid by 840.00.

Phoned the number to arrange repayment to ask how this can be when we told them our salary and at the end of the year there was a difference in salary.

Mine was £6000 lower than i expected. was told "i dont know much about tax credits just collect the overs" but i believe it's an error.

SO

do i pay up - £79 per month for 12 months and wait and see if it does get scrapped like they say they will on the news?

I am scared of owing money to inland revenue though what will happen to me?

Have I shocked everyone into silence?!

KathH · 21/08/2005 07:35

The whole thing is stupid. I've posted on another thread but I've just changed my bank details with them. They sent me a new award notice and the next payment I get has been doubled. Rang them up to query it and they said it's right. I daren't spend it as I'm sure I'm not entitled to it just thru changing my bank!

Nemo1977 · 21/08/2005 07:54

hi all
in similair position to a lot of you. We had a letter last week to say that my £170 a month has been stopped due to overpayment...however to prevent hardship they will continue to pay me money..a whopping £1.39 a month. They are saying that when I phoned to inform of changes it has not been updated on their system so WE owe them the money...no forgive me for being a bit dim but if they are saying oops we forgot to change it then surely i shouldnt have to pay it back. Am awaiting my appeal form to sort it out. Also like expat am near 6mths pregnant and i am on dla due to severe depression and anxiety which this whole fiasco is not helping. We do not now have the money this month to pay our mortgage so we are going to have to ask to borrow money from some family.
It just makes me so annoyed that they are obviously making too many mistakes but not actually seeming to be accepting responsibility. I always thought that because I phoned as soon as anything changed that I would be ok. Did not expect one of their workers not to bother changing amount.

expatinscotland · 21/08/2005 09:42

I made the same mistake, Nemo. Thinking when I phoned it would be dealt with. Luckily I recorded the date/time I called and whom I spoke with. I cannot believe it took them a year of letters and calls to correct THEIR simple mistakes when they changed our address so promplty.

SAVE EVERYTHING! Save ALL your award notices! I know it seems a lot - we have a total of 28 notices from October, 2003 - April, 2005. NONE has the same figures on it. Not a one.

I was ill with PND and being treated with many drugs at the time (didn't stop taking meds until October, 2004) and having to chase them up all the time was just an additional stress.

But like you, we wound up around £200/month down and unable to pay our rent and still eat. We're now about £1400 in debt. On top of what they claim we owe them - £1900.

We still have NEVER received written notice of why my WTC was ended. We found out when a Welfare Rights Advisor contacted them on our behalf.

Don't forget to complain to the Adjudicator:
[email protected]

And follow up those complaints in writing!

If you're disabled, see a charity appropriate to your condition and get a Welfare Advisor there involved as well. For example, my husband has severe learning disabilities and we have a Welfare Advisor at The Action Group working on our case as well.

expatinscotland · 21/08/2005 09:43

Don't take this lying down, ladies! That's exactly what they want!

KathH · 21/08/2005 13:13

well, they really have arsed it up this time. Just had a look at my account on their website, according to them I have 2 children with the same name born on the same day who i don't pay childcare for and my weekly childcare cost has gone down by £30 a week. aaaaaaaaaarggggggggggggh.

jamboure · 21/08/2005 21:04

ok have spoken to my sister who works for these wankers.

She is getting mine looked into, says they cant take all that money from me and they are looking to see where the overpayment has come from.

Will update you when i get news

That's good news jambourne, fingers crossed for you!

mummyoffour · 22/08/2005 01:58

hi jamboure if you have been overpaid they usually take it out of your tax credits at the end of the tax year. We were overpaid last year and paid it back at end of tax year, we were paid less than we were due for about 3 or 4 weeks. This is how they told us it should be done, enquire about this, they should not demand it from you like this.

ssd · 22/08/2005 19:48

The tax credits people must be mad. They sent me an award saying my dh worked 38 hours a week and earned nil? Surely the person entering these details must look twice ?? So now we are being paid £70 per week too much and every time I phone them I get another awards notice with a different amount on it. We've been overpaid about £1000 and it's going up.........

Linnet · 22/08/2005 22:40

I'm a bit worried about what's going to happen to us next year when it's renewal time.

I was on maternity leave last year and when I renewed our claim I mentioned this to the lady on the phone as they deduct any maternity pay that you receive from your annual income. this lowered my income by £2,600.

Problem is I'm worried that next year when I give my income from the P60 they're going to claim that they've overpaid us because of the difference between my lower income due to maternity leave and my usual annual income.

I'm too scared to phone them up though and query it as we need the money. We don't get a huge amount of money every week anyway so I'm hoping and praying that it will be ok, but we'll be in trouble if it's not.

Oh and I also much preferred the previous system of Family Credit, don't know why they changed it, they must have been sitting there thinking lets do something to increase the general populations blood pressure I know we'll invent Tax Credits...aarrgghh

expatinscotland · 23/08/2005 12:24

I think the change had to do w/Gordon Brown's needing more money to line his pockets with.

I really, really can't stand the man.

mummyoffour · 25/08/2005 00:18

expatinscotland...yep you right Gordon Brown was responsible....I am not a fan of his but have to say even tho the system is crap and needs sorting my dh and family are better off on his system

nikkie · 25/08/2005 21:38

They owe me money from last year (£350ish) and this years payments are coming by giro as the system is stuck on my claim I have been dealing with them through my MP and he recommended that I don NOT use te helpline as they can only tell you what is on the screen.
