WOW!!!

Received this in the post after work on Monday afternoon and started reading that evening. Finished Thursday morning!

When I opened the packet it arrived in I had to smile as I had picked this up a couple of times on our local shop, but had decided against buying it because I really don't like books that have been translated. In the past I have always found that something must have got lost in translation!

Started reading as soon as I could. After the first chapter I was a little confused and unsure what to think. By the end of chapter 2 I was hooked. Unputdownable!!

I loved the complicated characters and the way that I got to really like them throughout the book. Quite a complex story behind it all and I had to keep flicking to the family tree in the front to see who was related to who and how, but that just added to the enjoyment. Very unpredictable throughout with a couple of storylines intertwining.

Fantastic book right to the last page. Now going to go and buy the next two!

Oh no, just discovered on the internet that the author is now dead!! Only 2 more books to read then.

Hi Positive Attitude - so glad you liked the book.

A friend of mine recently described it as 'trashy' and I was very indignant! I would describe it as a fantastic thriller, it is intelligent and well-written - and generally well-translated (I know what you mean though) I have the next two, but in hardback, so not much point in me sending them on!

The series tackles some issues generally so it is not complete fluff. I also really felt like I got a taste for the culture, the food they eat, the furniture they use () and their various laws and how the media/industry works.

I think the first one is the best, followed by the third. Don't leave too long between reading the three though as it gets even more confusing!

No way could this book be called "trashy". What does she read? War & Peace??

I could talk loads about this book, but don't want to ruin it too much for anyone before they read it.

I'll be getting the other two when DH next goes to his book club - 10% off and 3 for 2!

I agree - after the first chapter I nearly stuck it in the post but thought it deserved another go. Got completely sucked in. Will be buying the next two books.

I think PA said everything much better than I'm able to (have overtiredbrain at the moment!).

I really enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down. As others have said it took a couple of chapters to get going but then I was hooked. I liked the fact it was set in another country and the different characters. It is a thriller but with a wider plot than other thrillers. I will now be going on to read the other two books. Thanks Flying cloud for such a good book I wouldn't have read it otherwise.

PositiveAttitude · 04/05/2010 08:07

Book 2 of the trilogy is EVEN better IMO! Just read that one, too.
DH is reading the third one and I am nagging him to hurry up so that I can start on that one next.

Another one who couldn't put this book down once she started. I'm with PA I'm never really keen on books which have been translated but this was great. I struggled to get my head round what was going on in the first chapter but once I got into the story I was hooked. I thought it was a very clever and well thought out book and I love a good thriller. Play are selling the books for £3.00 each so I intend to get the other two as soon as possible and take them on holiday with me.
