Ok guess I had better post proper discussion as I haven't done it yet.

I did love it and loved the way it all tied together.

Lots of different plots/storylines but got the balance right of not having too many iyswim.

I really want to read more by the same author. Thought it well written and the characters believable too.

Overall would give the book 9 out of 10

Im so glad you enjoyed it simpson.I read her first novel when it came out at least 15yrs ago and had read nothing by her since then until recently. The latest one is a 'Richard and Judy' choice which looks good too. She's recently changed her'genre' and the books can be quite dark, but in all of her books that I have read there are are always lots of inter-conecting little stories that tell the bigger picture IYKWIM -.The last 3or 4 have had the same characters in and Im finding that I really care about them and what happens to them!

Only just managed to finish this book. Its been a slow month for me resding wise. This book has even travelled to Rome with me in an attempt to finish it in time.

All that aside I really enjoyed it. I did struggle a bit at times as I was reading it and then leaving it a while before I had chance to read more, so was having to backtrack to refresh myself who everyone was.

Really liked how it all connected together, I guessed it would have to and a couple of nights laid in bed trying to guess where it was all going.

Will come back and be a bit more detailed when I have a bit more time.

Another thumbs up from me!

I've read several other books by Kate Atkinson and I think this is probably my favourite so far. The structure of the book was interesting and a good way of setting out the story without revealing too much - the way that it forces you to link all the characters together yourself, and work out who fits in where, really drags you into the plot.

It was darker than I was expecting, having only read KA's earlier novels, which are less serious, but I think that the shocking scenes were very well written, and you really don't see them coming. The book is well-balanced, though, and some of the light-hearted bits are really funny - I love it when Marlee goes to stay with Kim while Jackson's in hospital, and comes back speaking Russian.

I'm definitely going to get hold of the sequels - the characters are so good I need to know what happens next!

I didn't realise there were sequels. What are they called as I think I would like to read them.

steamedtreaclesponge · 02/10/2009 11:10

Just googled and it looks like the next one is called One Good Turn and the one after that, When Will There Be Good News? Going to add them to my library list...

I found this very readable but the beginning, while very evocative, was so dark it was quite hard to read on. Olivia's disappearance and the impact of Laura's murder were conveyed so well it was upsetting.

The third case history was weaker and it felt to me that it had been created to fit the plot more than anything else.

The second, lighter half of the book was fun but so different in tone it almost felt as though it had been written by a different author. The various happy endings for the characters were, I thought, a little unreal and contrived.

It is definitely the earlier, darker half that will stay in my memory because it was so powerful.

An unusual book, I thought, and some parts of it worked better than others, but I did enjoy it and I will be looking out for her others.

I love this book - its very warming to know that it is the first of a trilogy! I've read all three and the characters re-appear and develop throughout.
I once heard the author speak at a Festival -she lives in Edinburgh and as I have lived there myself in the past, I love being able to place the scenes.
My favourite thread of the story was definitely Theo/Laura - but Jackson is a great character.
Great read - and recommend the others!

JackBauer · 27/04/2010 19:53

I really enjoyed this and am waiting for her other books to come into my library.
I thought the sister's interaction very good and wholly believable (having 3 sisters myself)
My only gripe was the ending, it was way too easy and didn't seem to mesh with the darkness of the rest of the book. it felt like the rushed ned of an essay iyswim.

cathcat · 22/06/2010 22:55

I really loved this book. KA is a great writer. I read Behind the Scenes at the museum years ago and loved it too so I was really pleased to get another one of hers to read.
I thought the characters were all done very well and and I liked the plots too. Read it really quickly and will get the others mentioned here too.
Great choice.
