I needed to introduce a new book into the circle, so I ferretted out this one. It is a book my mom sent me nearly 10 years ago, an Oprah Book Club book and I was a bit sceptical at the time, but I really enjoyed it.

I do not remember the details of the story that clearly, but I do remember enjoying the character developments and the use of imagery in the language - like "stones in your pockets".

Also, I was surprised to find out that the author is in fact a man.

I hope you all enjoy it!

This was a fabulous book. I enjoyed it so much I couldn't put it down - but didn't want to carry on reading it because that would mean I would finish it!

The only bit I didn't get was the relationship between J and her husband, and why they suddenly had to move back East, when all was going seemingly so well in the West.

OK - now I want it back at the end of the circle, 'cause it sounds very good .

Beautiful. I have to get a copy of my own now!!!! The author told Jewel's often sad family story in a way that was not sentimental. It was beautifully written throughout and I loved how the story moved through the years seamlessly.
Like you Spamm I was suprised that the author was male. Writing in the first person as a woman was really well done. His feelings and descriptions were totally believable.
What a brilliant choice Spamm!!!!

I struggled to get into this book, and after the first 3 chapters wasn't sure whether or not to continue, I'm glad I did as half way through I couldn't put it down.

I too struggled at first - found it difficult to get into. Although it did warm up a touch. I too didn't really get why they had to move back all of a sudden when everything was going so well in California - except that he wanted to go 'home'. But it didn't really seem to me enough of a reason to leave her whole family (virtually) there as well as the care for Brenda Kay.

I too was surprised to see that bloke (the author) grinning at me on the last page! He does write well in the first person as a woman.

Overall - quite enjoyed but don't think I would read again.
