I really enjoyed this book - I found it quite compelling and had to keep reading to find out what had happened to cause such devastation and why Jimmy had ended up becoming Snowman. I must admit I didn't find any of the characters particularly likeable and the story itself is quite bleak, although there is plenty of humour along the way. However, the writing kept me hooked and it's an intriguing look at how the future might turn out.
I'm not normally a fan of science fiction - and I'm not sure whether this could be classed as pure science fiction in any case - but it's certainly a gripping story. The way in which the author handles issues such as genetic engineering, child pornography and biotechnology makes for a thought-provoking and at times uncomfortable read.
My only criticism would be that I didn't find the ending particularly satisfying. I wasn't expecting a happy ending or for the ends to be neatly tied up, but it was a little more ambiguous than I would have liked - and I would have liked to find out more about what happened to Snowman afterwards. On the whole, though, a compelling and very readable book.
