positive test 5 weeks after m/c pregnant or leftover hormones?

Hi all,
I had a natural m/c at around 6-7 weeks in May. Bleeding started naturally on 30th, I bled for around a week, then had negative pregnancy tests and a clear scan (showing that uterus had returned to normal etc)
I have been expecting my period to return but it hasn't so far.
I did a pregnancy test on Sunday, 5 weeks after the bleeding started and it came up positive.
I don't know whether to think that we have been extremely lucky or whether the test is caused by something having been retained after the m/c that was missed by the scan and the other test?
Has anyone had a similar experience or have any ideas?

I would think that as you have had a negative test and a scan showing that our womb was clear his is very likely a new pregnancy. Get to your GP's and ask for a blood test! Fingers crossed for you!

Hello,

I went through something similar a few weeks ago - a positive HPT 9 weeks after mc. unlike you, I didn't do a test after the mc so I wasn't sure if it was residual hormones.

I'm 8+5 weeks pg...

Get thee to a doctor for a blood test!

Best wishes

Thank you both, I will phone the doctor now!

I would agree with dropdeadfred, a BFP after a BFN is pretty much an ominious sign...tenative congrats :-)

I dont want to scare you but I was in a similar situation to you and finally discovered that I had had a partial molar pregnancy. This is a very rare but serious disease which you definitely want to get ruled out. I had a medically managed m/c, then a clear scan, then no periods before being diagnosed by another ultrasound scan showing regrowth of placental tissue

One of the signs of this condition is being extremely sick while pregnant, were you? If you were, tell your doctor. If she suspects molar pregnancy she will do several blood tests to see if the levels of Hcg are rising. Its a simple test, so its worth checking out.

You can read more about it here:www.molarpregnancy.co.uk/

I wish you all the best, I so hope that its good news for you!

Thanks ladies,

I did another cheap test last night which was much stronger so I am hopefull that it might just turn out to be good news.

MummyAbroad thank you for the advice, I am sorry to hear that you had to go through that it must have been frightening. How many weeks were you when you had the miscarriage?

I have booked an appointment with the doctor for Monday so I will ask about molar pregnancy then. I haven't felt particularly sick yet and didn't at all with the m/c pregnancy so I hope that is a good sign.

Thanks all once again and best wishes for you, especially Silver, good luck!

I had similar.
I was 6 weeks pregnant and started bleeding, I went to the doctors and she said that because of my m/c history, there was no need to scan or do any follow up tests.
I continued to feel 'odd' and 6 weeks later did another pregnancy test that was positive.
I went back to the doctor and she sent me for a scan thinking maybe I'd lost a twin or something, but it was a new pregnancy, I was just over 5 weeks.
Goodluck x

Thanks gruffalomum,

Good for you for getting the appointment, I hope you can get some answers.

I had a retained miscarriage, I started spotting at what I thought was 14 weeks, did a scan immediately and discovered the baby stopped growing at 8 weeks and the uterus at 10. I was really sick at about 6 weeks.

If your doctor does two seperate hCG tests she will be able to confirm the pregnancy if the level is doubling every two days.

b est of luck for Monday!

Hi MummyAbroad (where abroad are you by the way somewhere exotic?!)

So sorry to hear more about your loss, it sounds really really tough. I hope things are getting better for you now?

Managed to get an appointment this morning. The doctor seemed happy to take my word for it that I had the positive tests and said that it sounds like a new normal pregnancy.

However when I said that I was really worried that it might be something else she did seem to pay a bit more attention to the relatively short length of time since the mc and said that while it was very unlikely to be a molar pregnancy as I had the negative test, it might be retained products from the mc.

I may have to have an early scan, she is going to get back to me.

I stupidly forgot to ask for a blood test, I should have done that, but after a 2 hour wait to see her while trying to entertain a teething 18mo I wasn't at my best!

Thanks so much for your advice and support. I'll pop back when I know something for sure.

hi gruffalomum

That all sounds very positive, I'm so pleased for you. Please let us know how you get on.

I have only very recently been diagnosed with molar so I'm no expert. Please remember that it is very rare too, so dont let my story scare you too much!

I am waiting for some lab results to come back on Monday which will give the oncologist a good idea of what kind of treatment I can expect, most women with molars are given mild dose chemotherapy, so its all a bit worrying. Looking forward to finding out one way or the other what I am in for.

Wish i could go back to just having had a "normal" miscarriage :-(

In the meantime I will try and distract myself by enjoying the sunshine over here in Costa Rica and attending to my 2 year old, who is right now plastering himself in sun cream

best wishes xxx

gruffalomum · 12/07/2010 23:18

Thanks MummyAbroad,

Costa Rica, wow! Am very jealous of that! Are you there for work or fun or both?

You sound so together for such a recent diagnosis, I really admire you. It must be so hard and upsetting to have to have the ongoing treatment. I will be thinking of you.

No news from my end other than that I do have to have a scan in two weeks. I am scared and looking forward to it at the same time. Sometimes I feel really pregnant and start to feel happy but mostly I am very anxious that something will or already has gone wrong.

Thanks so much for all your support. Please keep in touch and let me know how things go for you. xxx

Hi gruffalomum,

Turns out not to be molar! I had the tissue from the ERPC analysed and apparently this showed that the cells werent molar and I dont need chemotherapy. A huge relief!! I am still very confused though because in the space of a month a massive amount of placental cells regrew, and I have a lump on my lung, and as yet no answers. Its about 4 months since the miscarriage and my HCG is low but still "pregnant" (51)

I originally came to CR for work, but I am a stay at home mum now, my husband is Costa Rican. Hopefully DS will be bilingual, he wont have to struggle to learn Spanish like I did!

We all have our together and untogether days! I am feeling very hopeful at the moment though, because now I wont have to wait a year before ttc.

Best of luck with the scan,

xxxx
