Expectant management - miscarriage at 8 1/2 weeks - advice please!

Hello everyone, was hoping for some advice. Sorry that the post is quite long and might be TMI!

I miscarried at 8 1/2 weeks about 2 1/2 weeks ago (it was my first pregnancy). When I started to bleed I had a scan and there was a heartbeat, but it looked like 5+5 rather than the 8+ I was expecting. A couple of days later I bled very heavily and passed some huge clots, and then after a couple of days it slowed to just spotting and some blood when I wiped, which had continued until today. Today I passed a weird grey clot and cramping started again so I went to the day gynae assessment unit at the hospital. They did an examination and found some more products that they took out. This afternoon I started bleeding very heavily again and passed more huge clots. Things seem to have calmed down again now, and the dr reckons it should all be finished within a couple of weeks and the preg test should be negative then too (it's currently still positive, although I used a clearblue digital that says 1-2 instead of 3+ now so I guess that's a good sign that the hormones are going down?)

I was just wondering if anyone's got any experience of whether this is normal? I feel a bit isolated and not getting much advice from the hospital - they just keep telling me I might continue to bleed for up to a month after the miscarriage but I really want to draw a line under this and move on with my life.... When I first miscarried, they told me a D&C wasn't an option as I was bleeding by myself, but I'm worried that this doesn't seem to be clearing itself up, although feel like I've come so far now it would be good to manage without a D&C if I can :-S

Any advice would be welcome - feel quite scared and confused :-(

Hi, I just read your post and I haven't had a similar experience but two places you could call for advice and support are the miscarriage association and NHS direct. I called NHS direct when I had some bleeding last weekend, a nurse called me back really quickly and was lovely, kind and supportive. Take care.

HiPinkFondantFancy,so sorry to hear about your miscarrige
Something similar happened to me, 8 1/2 weeks, no d/c offered and unfortunatly it took about 4/5 weeks to stop bleeding. Actually ended up in hospital in France because the pregnancy test hospital at home had recommended I do showed up as positive.Thankfully was given magic pill which stopped bleeding over night.Advice from reallygrumpy excellent, u need reassurance and support during a really difficult time. Best wishes and take care

Hi PinkFondantFancy, very sorry to hear what has happened.
I had a missed miscarriage (first pregnancy, too) at 11 weeks, and was advised to wait to see if I lost the "products" naturally. It was slow and drawn out, and my gynae advised a D+C to be on the safe side and to help me come to terms with what had happened. I had one and it did help me to draw a line, as you say.
I was advised to wait for 3 months before trying again, to give the womb time to recover and build up a healthy lining. It's a scary time, and I hope you are ok.

Thanks everyone, thanks so much for your posts. Am still bleeding and cramping but hopefully this can't go on much longer because I can't believe how many clots I've lost already in the past couple of weeks!!
