complicated miscarriage - should I trust my instincts or just do what the doctors say and take methotrexate?

I would really appreciate some advice.

I began a mc at 5 weeks at the end of March.

My HCG continued to rise very slowly after an initial 3 day bleed, highest reading at about 7-8 weeks was 180

I started to bleed again on 20th May - and have bled heavily since.

Last week my HCG fell for the first time to 100 from 180

I have had two scans - first one showed some small something they couldn't identify, second (last week) showed an empty womb.

i have also had an ovarian cyst which has gone down.

Today, my hcg has risen again to 108 (from 100 this time last week) and they now want to pump me full of methotrexate.

All my instincts are not to have it - because I would have to wait a further 3 months to TTC, and it's a heavy drug.

I am forty two and have a tilted womb, at no time have they seen a baby inside me.

Have spoken to the doctor and been very re-assured, so I am having the injection in the morning.

I'm glad you feel reassured. FWIW, I would have thought with fluctuating hcg levels and the embryo not definitely spotted, methotrexate might be the right action.

I am so sorry.

hope it all goes well erm as well as these things can. No experience myself (have mc naturally and opted for erpc) but just wanted to wish you all the best

Hairytriangle, what a horrible thing to go through.

I had a persistent molar pregnancy in 2003, that required 6 months of methotrexate injections, and 4 months of stronger chemotherapy. I had to wait a year after treatment to ttc, but went on to have 2 dds and am now pregnant with third, with no further problems.

It wasn't great, and there were some side effects to the methotrexate (mouth ulcers, when they were sorting out dosage, tiredness and nausea). But it is really important to get your hcg levels down.

Good luck tomorrow, look after yourself, and let us know how you are getting on.

thank you all i feel much better about it. AFAIK I'll need one single injection and it will be 3 months waiting to ttc- I just hope it works!

Best of luck to you Hairy. I have followed your story on other threads.

Sounds like you're doing the right thing, and hope that the three months will fly past.

I had a partial molar pregnancy four years ago, and i know what it's like waiting for those damned hcg levels to fall.

Will be keeping all crossed for a successful pregnancy for you next time!

Just a quick post to say am thinking of you today HairyT

Hope you got through the mexo injection (mentally) and that it will finally set you on the road to physical recovery and future success

Thanks guys it all went well, I feel fine, just praying and hoping very much this will deal with it! Nurses and docs all absolutely lovely, very understanding and re-assuring, apparently they had a lady who had metho in Jan who has just come back with a happy healthy pregnancy and they all cooed over me and said there's no reason on earth I can't have a healthy pregnancy in the future and I'm clearly still dropping eggs at the grand old age of 42

I'm going to book an hsg in the next cycle to make sure my tubes are clear and then in Sept I can try again
