Cervical Stitch - What are my friends chances?

Already posted this in Pregnancy but thought there might be someone here who could answer my question. Hope that is ok?

One of my closest friends has just had a cervical stitch (she is about 14 weeks now). It is her second stitch and her 4th pregnancy. She lost the first 3 babies at 18-19 weeks and is understandably very anxious at the moment.

Her history is that her mother died of cervical cancer at quite a young age. She has two sisters and all three of them have bicornuate uteruses. One of her sisters has adopted after several miscarriages (although they were early ones) and her other sister has never tried.

My friend had her first late loss about 4 years ago now. She tried again and the same thing happened again - her waters went and the doctors could do nothing

The third time they put in a stitch under local anaesthetic but it did not work.

This time she has been under the care of a consultant and has bi-weekly scans. She had the stitch put in last week (this was a different type of stitch and they did two high up on the cervix under general anaesthetic) and today had a checkup where they said the baby is doing well but the cervix is short so she should not be confident but hopeful. She has been told no sex or exercise but has not been put on bed rest.

I am so worried for her and wonder if anyone has been through something similar which had a good outcome?

I'm sorry I don't know anything to reassure you and her but didn't want your thread to go unanswered. I really hope it all works out for her and in a few months she's cuddling her newborn.

i'm really sorry - this sounds a horrible situation. i've not read of anyone on this board with the same condition. however, it sounds like she is getting the best possible care....

Actually there are a few people with a bicornuate uterus, I have one and when I started a thread about it last year there were mumsnetters with positive stories. I will find the thread and link. Nobody mentioned having a stitch but then it isn't always the case that the two go together. I have seen mumsnetters say they had a stitch though. It might be worthwhile re-posting the thread with bicornuate uterus and cervical stitch in the title?

I haven't heard of that but had an emergency stitch with my DS last year at 21 weeks (lost his sister the year before at 20 weeks). I managed to carry him to term. I know several people who have had stitches with a good outcome. Really hope your friend has a successful pregnancy.

Hi, hopefully i can offer some hope for your friend.

I lost my first son after going into labour at 23wks. After that it was discovered that i have a bicornuate uterus and possibly a weak cervix.

I now have 3 children. In each pregnancy i had a stitch inserted at between 12-16wks. I was advised no sex or swimming with stitch in situ due to infection risk but apart from that no other restrictions.

2 of mine went to 37weeks and 1 33 weeks as she was in the smaller horn of the uterus. Am currently trying for number 4!! Good luck to your friend let me know if she would like any more info.
