haematologist appt..(or however you spell it...)

bit of history...4 mc since august 2008.

1st cons appt in november. as i already have 2 dc he was not interested in doing the standard blood tests. i was lucky enough that when i had my lasst erpc, a doc did all the necessary first tests.

they were all normal and my cons dismissed doing any more. he seemed to be inclined to belive it was either a chromosome prob with dp or an immune issue.

so, i have since received a letter from the hopital saying an appointment has been made for me to see a haematologist (sp). i called the hosp and it was my cons who has requested this.

spoke to my gp and she doesnt see any reason why he would of requested this. any repeat bloods for the standard tests should of just been done in the clinic i normally attend. and i have an appt soon anyway.

anyone like to take a guess why he has done this?

oh yes and happy new year to you all, lets hope we all have some much better luck in 2010!

hmm, i don't know. sounds a bit strange. personally i wouldn't turn it down though - it's another expert opinion, isn't it? worth just going along?

just1moreplease · 01/01/2010 12:34

kissmummy i will definately be attending. i just hate not knowing what it is for!

i was hoping someone else may have been referred to one and could share the reasons why. oh well, i guess i will find out soon enough.

It is impossible to answer that without knowing what blood tests you have already had. It would be very unusual for a consultant who was not a haematologist to order, and be able to interpret, specialised tests for particular clotting issues that might be a cause of recurrent miscarriage. This is probably why you have been referred.

I am guessing that if the standard tests - whatever they were, are normal, you have been referred so that you can have more specialised tests, that can only be organised by the haematologist.

In short - I would go along to the appointment. Some women try for years to get this type of referral.

Hope it is useful. Good luck.

when i first met my cons i was very keen to pursue a second opinion, as he seemed to be very dismissive. since then he has sent dp for some fairly specialised sperm tests and now this referral. hopefully this means he is taking my case seriously after all.

thanks for replies though.
xx

hi again
surprised to hear your DP has had specialised sperm tests. we have repeatedly been told (by different consultants) that the sperm is hardly ever a factor in miscarriage, except where there is a chromasome issue. that seems to be one test only. (karotyping.) i would be very interested to hear what other tests can be done on sperm if you have any more info?

just1moreplease · 01/01/2010 18:40

kissmummy i do have some more info but an at the inlaws right now. as far as i knew we were only having the basic tests but when we had the appt at the fertility clinic, the man doing our tests told us the cons had requested the further tests. i have the names of the tests written in my diary at home. will post tomorrow with the info.

sorry for delay getting back to you.
i did email you before xmas, not sure if you got that though.

dp has had his sperm checked for all the usual things like, count, motility, morphology etc ansd he is also having a dna fragmentation [sp] test.

cons doesnt think this will show anything but you never know.

next appt for us is feb 18th, where are you at with your tests now?
