Hi iam pretty sure i have MC, on the 23rd i started spotting so went to the gp's on the 24th, she told me to go back in a week with not much other advice. Half a week later and now iam bleeding more heavily and have period pains. What am i meant to do, am i supposed to just ride it out or something else, i was 5 weeks pg. I have tried ringing NHS direct but they say they are busy and only dealing with emergencies and my doc's are closed. I have got the emergency doc's but i dont feel it warrants an emergency.

Thanks for reading this far.

I am really sorry, it is horrible to miscarry, but to do so over Christmas is really horrible.

Not really sure what you should do, as I had a D&C after miscarrying as that was advised in the country that I was living. I know that the advice in UK is often to wait and let the body deal with it naturally.

You should definitely see a doctor if you have a high temperature, or if you feel really unwell as this could be a sign of an infection. It is not very common but you should be aware of the risks.

Thank you, iam feeling well in myself, i have had a rough couple of days but feel better now. It is a horrible thing to go through, and alot of people don't understand, my sister found out that i was more than likely losing the baby on xmas eve, she next got in touch on boxing day with a message reading, 'how was your christmas regardless'
I have found out today that a family member on dh's side is a midwife so will ring her later. I will also book my appointment with my gp tomorrow to make sure everythings is as ok as it can be.
Thank you for replying.

Some people find it difficult to know what to say in such situations, and often a mc in early pregnancy is not seen as so distressing for those not directly affected.

Glad that you have found someone to talk it over with, I hope she has some good advice for you.

PoppyIsApain · 29/12/2009 15:57

Thanks, i know it can be hard for people to understand but it still infuriates me when it is my sister.
I havent rang my dh's aunt yet but tried to get a gp's app but couldnt get past the receptionist who kept saying ring back tomorrow, im feeling very dizzy and a little sick and bleeding much more than with a normal period, i can't get over how shit the care for those having mc are in the uk now, when my mum had one 16 years ago she was in hospital all weekend, i havent even been scanned or checked apart from a 5 min doc's app a week ago.
Bloody england.
Thank you so much for being there for me MmeLindt

Hi Poppy

I'm so sorry this has happened to you.

I also had a MC on 13th and I was about 7 weeks.

I was seen at the hospital at the "Early Pregnancy Assesment Unit" and I was scanned to see if everything had gone IYKWIM. I was also given "open access" for 10 days which meant I could ring the ward directly and speak to nurse/midwife/doctor if neccessary.

Hopefully you will get a GP's appointment tomorrow and they will refer you on. I think it's important to get checked out as MmeLindt said due to the possible risk of infection.

When I initially suspected I was having a MC, I phoned the surgery and just asked to speak to any midwife that was in the building. The midwife told me to ring straight back and ask for an "emergency" appointment with the doctor.... you might try this if they still refuse to see you tomorrow.

I know what you're going through x

MmeLindt · 29/12/2009 18:23

If you don't get an appointment with your GP today then go to the hospital, if they have an Early Pregnancy unit go there, if not go to A&E. It is important that you are scanned, especially if you are feeling unwell.

Get stroppy with the receptionist. She is not medically qualified to decide whether you need to be seen.

I think that the quality of care differs immensely in the UK depending on where you are.

So sorry that you are having to worry about this on top of the actual sorrow of the m/c.

Hi Poppy

I am currently waiting to miscarry after some light bleeding and cramping on Boxing Day. I went to A&E who referred me to the Early Pregnancy Unit where I had an internal scan to see what was happening. I have a follow up scan scheduled for mid Jan to see if the sac has grown but have been told just to come in if i start bleeding before then. I wouldn't bother with your GP, they'll only send you to the EPU probably. As far as I can see, there are 2 EPUs in Northants (that is where you are right??). I would call them and see whether you can just come as a walk-in rather than wait for a referral. You might have to wait a couple of hours but you'll be seen and scanned that day and given advice on what is going on. Numbers are below:

EPU Kettering General Hospital
Northants
Rothwell Road Kettering
NN16 8UZ.
Clinic Times: 09:00-17:00 (Mon-Fri)
Tel: 01536 492236

EPU Northampton General Hospital
Spencer Ward
Cliftonville NN1 5BD.
Clinic Times: 08:30-16:30
Tel: 01604 544614

Sorry you're going through this.

Hi Poppy

I recognise you from the Aug 2010 thread. I am so sorry to hear about the bleeding and the way you have been treated by the receptionist - it is so appalling!

I MCed on Xmas Day, and we went straight to A&E. A midwife examined me and confirmed that I had passed the bean. I called my GP today, and she immediately made an appointment for me to go for a follow up scan at St Marys tomorrow morning.

During my first MC, I went to A&E, and they scanned me there and then. They also ran some tests on the levels of HCG hormones over 2 days to determine whether the pregnancy was progressing (I was around 5.5 weeks). At least it gave me certainty about what was happening.

If your GP is unresponsive I would go straight to A&E.

x

pigletmania · 29/12/2009 23:05

I went to A&E who referred me to early pregnancy unit, when i was scanned initially, baby died, miscarried some more now having another scan in two days time to see if anything left. I would go to A&E

PoppyIsApain · 29/12/2009 23:11

Im going to have a good nights leep then go phone spencer ward.
I recognise you to northlondon, im sorry you went through this tool, so many on that thread seem to have miscarried, it is so sad.

Its horrible isn't it, MC is just so much more common than I ever thought.

Big cyber hug to you.

How did you get on today, Poppy?

Muser · 30/12/2009 22:50

Really sorry to hear this Poppy, I was on the August bus with you too and went through the same thing. I went straight to an emergency gynae clinic at St Thomas's in London and didn't bother with GPs, it does seem to be the better way of doing it. No scans for me as it was so early, but they did blood tests to see how my HCG levels were doing.

Even with the emergency gynae clinic I think the care is a bit lacking. I didn't really get any advice after I had the tests done which confirmed my HCG levels were falling. Just asked to wait a week, do a pregnancy test, and ring back with the result. The test was negative and all I got was "wait for your period to come and then you can start trying again". I was being very matter of fact about the whole thing and it was very early so maybe they thought I didn't need more support.

Hope you get the help you need to get through this. It is so much more common than you realise. The main thing to remember is it's not your fault.

PoppyIsApain · 31/12/2009 16:22

Hi i went to the EPU today and had an internal which confirmed everything was over, they did a pg test which was negative, i could hear them speaking as there was only a curtain between us, i think they thought i was deaf! Iam glad i have my answer now although it is a horrible answer. I dont need anymore scans or treatment and they said i could try again when i was ready. The bloody doctor was pregnant, tactful in a place that is mainly for mc eh!

Hello again. I just read your thread after you answered my Happy new year thread. Sorry this has happened to you and not very nice over the xmas and new year time. I wish you lots of luck for next time.

northlondonchoclover · 31/12/2009 18:01

Sorry to hear poppy. My GP was pregnant too! Everyone around me seems to be pregnant !!

PDR · 31/12/2009 18:44

So sorry Poppy.

MmeLindt · 31/12/2009 19:40

So sorry that it has been the answer you were dreading. I had my second mc at this time of year and went on to have DD the following April. I know how terrible you are feeling now but believe me when I say that despite the heartache of the mcs, the thought that without them I would not have my DD makes them bearable.

I wish you the same happiness in the not too distant future.
