Does anyone know when miscarriage is most likely to occur within the first trimester?

I was recently told by a MW, when I was worrying about it, that 6-8 weeks is when it is most likely. She basically implied that getting to 8 weeks would be a good sign.

I've been told that 6 - 7 weeks is most likely - when the placenta is starting to take over I think

If you see a heartbeat at 8 weeks, the statistical likelihood of mc reduces dramatically.

Am OK thanks. Just wondering as had a mmc between DC2 amd DC3 and wondering when it is most likely to happen if it is going to.

I am glad I found this post because I've been wondering the same thing. I hear about women having mc's at 8 or 9 weeks - some even more along, and I'm wondering if the causes of these later mc's are different than those earlier mc's. All 3 of mine were between 6-7 weeks, so I'm praying that if I can make it 8 this time, then I'll be okay...I've heard the stats but still I'm curious as to the causes of why it would happen so late?

I have had a number of missed m/c's, including one where the baby died at 9 weeks. That was due to a chromosome abnormality, though. (Turner Syndrome).

I think that, although every week the chances decrease, that 10-12 week mark is critical as that's when the placenta has to 'take over' from the yolk sac as baby's source of energy.

I've read that it's when a period would have been due - so about 7 weeks and 10-11 weeks. Once a heartbeat has been detected the risk drops from 15-20% to 7-8% though. The earliest it can be detected is 7 weeks. In a lot of mc the pregnancy never really develops, so there never is a heartbeat.

Thanks for your input Zippys and Mouette. This whole issue is so crazy - the doctors don't even know much themselves, and here we are trying to find the answers among ourselves.

When I was 6 weeks, I had a scan and the doc saw the heartbeat but a week later, I began to miscarry. I was like, Yeah figures, I'd be in that 7-8%, just like I'm in the 1% (?) of women who have 3 or more mc's! I can't help but think there's something odd going on with me. Now that I'm 6.5 weeks preggers, I'm scared to death every time I go pee. We already got a good scan in - saw the heartbeat and the bean measured right...but who knows? What if I'm in that 7-8% AGAIN?! I'll be convinced then that there's some other unearthly force behind this mahem...or at least, a medical explanation in the field of reproduction that hasn't yet been discovered.

I wish I had the tissue tested for my last mc. Maybe it was a chromosome abnormality. I'm wondering of the women on here, how many of you mc's were due to chromosomal issues. You'd think if you have recurrent mc's, all of them would have occurred because of the same reason...

I'm rambling now. Sorry.

Hi Daynee,
I am also in the one percent.

TTC 6 years (last 2 yrs having fertility treatment)

MMC at 8 weeks
Ruptured ectopic at 6 1/2 weeks
MMC (twins) at 7 weeks
MMC (chromosome abnormality, random apparently) at 9 weeks

Treated for immune issues with heparin, steroids, baby aspirin and IvIg.

Now 35 1/2 weeks pg with twins.

I so feel for you with the 'scared to death' thing. I had implantation bleeding, a bleed at 8 weeks and brown spotting for the first 12 weeks with this pg. Really hope this is 'the one' for you.

I'm in the 1% of women who have a late mc (after 14 weeks). I lost my first baby last year at 17 weeks because I have a weak cervix, it's a rare condition that causes recurrent late mc. I guess our reproductive systems are complicated, and there are a lot of things that can go wrong. I wish you all the best for this pregnancy - I know how nerve-racking it is going through another pregnancy after a mc. Best of luck!!

OMG Zippys - I'm so happy for you - this is totally awesome - twins!!You've done so much - heparin, steroids, baby aspirin and IvIg? Wow. Can I ask did you try anything before with the other mc's? I'm just wondering because if this one doesn't work out for me (so far 7 weeks ), I'd like to try steroids. Did you do the IvIg because of chromosomal issues?
Mouette - I'm so sorry about your late mc...that must be even more difficult than an early one. What is your next step?
