Recurrent mc: antiphospholipid antibody syndrome & aspirin & heparin treatment

1st timer although I have searched the archives for information before asking you all...

I have had 4 early miscarriages (9 weeks and under) and an ectopic pregnancy. I have been diagnosed as having antiphospholipid antibodies and was told that in my next pregnancy (the 5th one which I lost last Thursday) that I would be treated with aspirin and heparin. This tallies with evidence based practice. I know that aspirin is started as soon as there is a positive test. What I cannot find out is when the heparin should be started. If you have had this treatment I would be eternally grateful if you could tell me when your consultant started the heparin injections.

The legendary Prof Regan's clinic starts the heparin as soon as a pregnancy is seen on a scan at 5-6 weeks. Does this fit with your experience?

Many, many thanks for your help

Hi,

I'm really sorry to read about all of your losses. You can read my story on the miscarriage thread about NK cells - too depressing to write it again.
Anyway, I started Clexane injections at just under 6 weeks. I hadn't been diagnosed with a clotting problem, I was taking it 'just in case'. I took progesterone pessaries too (not pleasant!). Unfortunately, I still had a miscarriage but there are lots of hopeful stories out there.

Sending lots of luck.

Take care.

Xxx

Sorry for your losses i really am.

After many mc's/mmc i have tried the drugs heparin, aspirin, progesterone, steroids etc... but sadly did not work for me so am having chicago level 2 which does indepth immune issue testing. The level 1 chicago tests look in to immune issues such as APS/clotting issues etc but not indepth nk cells etc... The next treatment for me will probably be ivig, humira aswell as all the above drugs.

When i used the heparin i started as soon as i got a BFP, just before 4 weeks.
Takecare my lovely.
XXX.

Im sorry for your losses.
Im new on here aswell and thought my story might help you in some way. Give you hope.
I had a misscarriage when i was 18weeks preg with my first baby.
They found out that i had antiphospholipid antibodies (Sticky blood)
When i found out i was preg again i had to go straight to the Early pregnancy unit at my local hospital. They did a scan and found i was 5 weeks preg. They put me straight onto Clexaine Injections. Had to do it once a day at the same time everyday in my stomach (changing sides each day)
I had to do this until i felt i was going into labour.
I am now a mummy to healthy litte boy Charlie.
There are occassions this might not work for some women but thought it was important to let you know that it does work for some.
I wish you all the luck in the world.
Hope this has helped give you some hope.
Thinking of you.
Take care.
x

I started heparin at just gone 6 weeks, after a scan proved that there was a live embryo in there.

Hi,I had 3 mmc - the last one at 12 weeks :( I am now almost 17 weeks pregnant, and have been taking clexane, aspirin and progesterone. Also I had my nk cells tested and was taking steroids until 12 weeks.

I was already taking asprin whilst TTC ( I have factor v leiden) and clexane from bfp. I take 150mg of aspirin as I had a positive TEG test at st mary's.

Good luck I really hope you reach your goal xxxa

Fingers crossed for everyone - remember there's an over 80% chance everything will be OK. I do know what you're going through - had eleven miscarriages (one late) altogether but no live births. However, please remember that I am the exception (apparently I have severe APS - a term applied when you lose a baby late and on treatment) and lots of really amazing real life miracles do happen :)

So sorry to hear about your miscarriages.

I was diagnosed with APS after three miscarriages in 2007 and treated by Raj Rai at St Mary's. I was told to start the heparin injections as soon as I had a positive pregnancy test (rather than waiting for a scan) and had the injections daily until about 30 weeks in both subsequent pregnancies. I'm now lucky enough to have two children.

Best of luck x

Sorry you're going through this OP. I don't have a blood condition but was suggested heparin by st mary's after recurrent m/c. had heparin from bfp, the gp can prescribe but need details of the dose etc from a consultant, got myself in a state about getting it as hadn't got this sorted before ttc. The pharmacist showed me how to do the injection.

Typing this next to a sleeping dd2!

hey there
im in the same boat, i have been pregnant 1o times and 1 son to show for it, after 9 mcs they have finally figured out i have antiphopholipid syndrome.
im pregnant now only 5 weeks along, they had be start taking the injections 5 days after we tried for baby befor we knew we were actually pregnant. it worked soo far. i do not like the injections but am doing them everyday. they said i am high risk for the entire pregnancy, any one knows what that actually means? do i sit and do nothing or can i do stuff??

Cutie - this is a zombie thread. Come join us here on the current RMC thread where there are several women with diagnosed clotting problems/APS.

I was on clexane for my first trimester (don't have a clotting problem but it's supposed to help the developing placenta) and it's not much fun injecting, but worth it if it helps. I was told not to do anything strenuous, had to give up running for example, but otherwise to carry on as normal.
