I am probably going to self medicate with steroids as I have been refused it thru the hospital cos of my BMI. They won't consider me even though I have taken them before for a skin condition... I never had side effects before so don't beleive I will get them if I medicate

What do you want to take them for?
How high is your BMI?

CountessDracula · 16/10/2008 14:18

Do you have high BP?

noddyholder · 16/10/2008 14:23

i wouldn't self medicate with such a powerful drug.It is lethal if you are overweight or have high BP and it also masks inflammation so you can have infections etc for ages without knowing.

oinker · 16/10/2008 14:25

Take them for pregnancy they sort out the Natural Killer Cells... I have not taken them for this yet.
I took them before for a skin condition which is something I still have but once every 2 or 3 years....
I don't have any other conditions..No blood pressure problems at all

Are you doing anything about your BMI?

joyfuleyes · 16/10/2008 15:41

It isn't lethal if you have a high BMI

I replied on the other thread - my BMI is close to 37 (no BP/diabetes/insulin intolerance etc etc) & my obstetrician was happy to prescribe it (NHS doctor). I take 20mg a day (fairly low dose as far as it goes & the standard one for miscarriage prophylaxis) through the first trimester. Most serious concern my drs had was of GI side effects - important that you use the enetric coated. 20mg/day carries a minimal risk of infection.

joyfuleyes · 16/10/2008 15:43

... meant to say no high BP issues (obviously if I had no BP I'd be screwed). There aren't fat people dropping dead in the streets because they've been prescribed steroids.

noddyholder · 16/10/2008 15:49

I have been on it 25 yrs and weight being high does make you more susceptible to diabetes i think but not sure if it is only taken for a short time.

noddyholder · 16/10/2008 15:49

why the ?You can't say anything on MN these days no wonder people are leaving in bloody droves

TheBlonde · 16/10/2008 16:49

can you buy it over the counter in the UK?

sue10 · 19/10/2008 20:32

Hi ladies,
im 4 stone over weight but have been given steroids to try out for next cycle to try to supress the blasted nk cells. I dont think it is a good idea to take steroids when over weight but tbh i couldn't give a monkeys as long as it works and i get my baby, i'll worry about the other things afterwards. I have a friend who has now got diabetes induced from the use of steroids and this does cause her problems but i guess it's down to each individual. I dont think you can buy steroids over the counter but not 100% sure. Goodluck everyone.

Thanks for all the input ladies.....
Those of you who are taking it can you state what hospitals are treating you?
St Marys at Paddington, (prof Regan) will not give it to me !!!
I am willing to go to another hospital local to London (will travel as far as Liverpool)

Epsom General Hospital Mr Shehata will perscribe the steroids, you can see him private or on the nhs. OR private at CARE Nottingham.

shazzaren · 25/10/2008 08:44

I am on prednisoline steroids under mr shehata for NKC at the moment, they are only to be taken post ov second half of cycle. Discontinued slowly at 12 weeks if pg.

oinker · 25/10/2008 13:44

Do they do any specail tests on you throughout the time that you are taking the steroids?
Do they do any blood checks, weight or urine? I know for a fact St Marys won't. they told me. All St Marys do are the weekly scans.

oinker · 25/10/2008 13:45

I really hope the steroids work out for you two.............

I have everything crossed...... xxxxx

OP posts:
oinker · 25/10/2008 13:53

I will be going to LWH in the next couple of weeks. A/F is here at the moment. I can't wait for the test.

What will they do when I get there?

Does anyone know? I hope they just get down to the nitty gritty... I really don't want to be sitting there going through my history then onto bloods, weight, height etc etc.... I just want my NK cell results.... I am getting quite impatient with it all.

OP posts:
shazzaren · 25/10/2008 13:58

Totally feel for you with the impatience thing, I am exactly the same. The only check has been for bp after 2 weeks to check it's ok with the steroids.

oinker · 27/10/2008 20:43

Shazaren,

So, do you start the prednisoline b 4 conceiving? Do you take it as soon as you ovulate and then if you were to get a BFP yu carry on up to twelve weeks gestation.

I am trying to get as much info on this as possible....

I wander if Dr Shehata would treat me... I am about 8 miles from Epsom. I suppose I would need to get referred from my GP. God knows what they will say..I have already done Queen Charlottes and am now at St Marys

OP posts:
shazzaren · 28/10/2008 07:49

Yes he will treat you! Either from St Helier or Epsom General on NHS or Ashtead Hospital privately (straight away). Your GP will refer you - I have done the same with my GP, am sure he just leaves my referral letters on a template and changes the consultant name to suit me every time I go a bit crazy!
You take the steroids from ovulation, one every morning - not night as cause insomnia sometimes. Stop if period arrives. Do try and get to see Mr Shehata though, especially if you are so close to where he practices as he may treat you for a number of things and will cover all bases - not just NKC. Let me know how you get on.

oinker · 28/10/2008 11:12

Thanks...

You have been really helpful.

OP posts:
shazzaren · 31/10/2008 07:42

keep me posted Oinker, would love to know how you get on and what you are tested for etc. All the best.

oinker · 02/11/2008 18:23

One more question.....

What size steroid do you take...I think they are in milogrammes..

OP posts:
Glimmer · 02/11/2008 18:55

Hi Oinker,
I am really glad you got advice here on the steroids. Hope it works out to be treated by Mr.S. This way you could not only be under medical supervision, but it could also help research on this topic? I really hope this treatment will work for you.

shazzaren · 03/11/2008 07:37

Hi Oinker, they are 25mg.

Any luck with Mr S?
