hi there, appreciate you're all busy w/weekend etc.

i'm 7 weeks pregnant. have an 8 month old son.

i'm having a dark brown discharge which started yesterdat and is getting heavier along with pains and aches in my lower back/abdomen.

The epu is shut cos it's saturday. the ante natel ward won't see me. they said i have to go to a&e. what shoule i do? i want them to check if the baby's ok, but i dont think i can face sitting in a&e for 4 hours like this, esp with my LO.

I've heard so many things about MMC, blighted ovums, molars etc. i don't understand what some of them mean and i'm so worried that there's something wrong.

please help.

well it's been an emotional day.
spoke to nhs direct and midwives at the hospital.

finally was put in touch with my personal GP. She was really nice and supportive, but basically said that if i can stand the pain to stay at home, if the discharge becomes red or heavier or any pains on one side i'm to go straight into a&e.

She thinks i have been overdoing it and i will be able to have a scan first thing monday.

discharge is not as bad as it was, but intermittant.

i really apprecaite your advice and really feel for those of you going thru the same thing.

i'll let you know what happens tomorrow.

still v.emotional but really apprecaite your support.

oh god, i'm so sorry, but that is not good advice from your HCPs. really not good. i do hope that it's nothing serious, because you are in a very vulnerable position right now if so.

well my experience is not with miscarriage, it's with ectopic pregnancy, which is the highest maternal killer in the UK.

i suppose it follows that because one in four pregnancies ends in a miscarriage and ectopic is much rarer than that, doctors can make a guess a lot, and still be right, iykwim?

but my god, if they're wrong, the repercussions on the woman can be utterly devastating. i don't want to go into too much detail on this particular thread but it's not good.

that doctors aren't particularly feeling about pregnancy loss in general... who knows? every hcp i met who had actually been through it was good and kind, those who hadn't just didn't get it. perhaps it's not something anything other than life can train you for? perhaps they can send people home knowing that in all likelihood they won't ever see them again? perhaps they're just inured to it all? who knows?

Thanks for all your advice & support.

Spkoe to EPU this morning and i am booked in for a scan at 10am tomorrow, so that's a relief.

i'm not sure what to do with my LO tho, would it be really inappropriate to take him with? I don't want to upset any other mums-to-be by taking an 8month old with me, IYSWIM?

I'm relived but so nervous. I'm getting my self in a bit of a state thinking of what may/ may not have happened to the baby.

Aitch- i'm so sorry you went thru that, it must have been terrifying for you.
silvermum- thinking of you too.

Silvermum - I had no idea about the Miscarriage Campaign. I'm afraid we were only given reading material from the Miscarriage Assoc the last time I was admitted with retained products and they handed me a sheet as I was discharged at 3.25am !!!To be honest it was too painful to read for weeks and then when we did it was if we had become immune to all the expressions etc. What is the MN campaign ?

Jackstini · 15/07/2008 10:57

Fingers crossed for you Mrs B, hope it's ok

how did your scan go mrbick? i really hope your gp was right and you have been overdoing it.
its so sad but not at all surprising that so many women have had poor treatment during awful experiences like miscarriage and ectopic pregnancies. i have had 3 MCs (one at 14 weeks and 2 early at 5 weeks) and each time i have been fobbed off by HCP telling me the first time that bleeding is perfectly normal in pregnancy regardless of how heavy it is less tha 12 hours later i was rushed into the gynae emergency room having a extremely heavy bleed and subsequent MC. in this instance i wasnt even offered a scan until after the fact when they scanned me it was just matter of fact male sonographer, yep no more products in the womb you will be discharged later today. i had no support offered, no kind words from any of the staff there even though i sobbed my heart out when they told me i had definitely lost my baby. i was also 20 at the time and on my own when they told me. i was made to feel as if i was burdening them with my 'silly problem' my other 2 early MCs were completely dismissed by my
gp as she said a large number of pregnancies end in MC so if you dont want to experience them i recommend stopping trying for a baby (iv been TTC for 9 cycles as of 3 days ago) i made a formal complaint and im now hopeful she knows im not accepting sub-standard treatment!!
sorry about the rant but poor treatment concerning this area really gets my blood boiling

Hope things went ok this morning, have been thinking of you and your family.

MrsBick · 15/07/2008 13:45

Hi there,

thanks for your kind thoughts.

the scan went really well. Baby is ok!!!!

Sonographer at the EPU said it was prob delayed implantation bleeding, it's nearly stopped now but if it continues i can go in next week / week after to check all ok.

We were so pleased. Cried my eyes out after the scan. i don't think we realised how tense we were.

Thanks again, and my thoughts are with all of you going thru similar things.

Ei- hope things work out for you this cycle.
