Hello just sharing my experience of medical managment of MMC. Baby's heart beat stopped around 9 weeks and had been meauring about 9 days behind since 7 week scan. I was referred by the private scanning place to nhs EPAU and they gave me options of surgery or medication or just waiting it out. Given no bleeding and on going symptoms I asked for intervention and decided to go with medication. I didnt want to take time off work so this is how I timed it :
The first tablets you take block progesterone. I took them on thursday morning and went straight to work. I didn’t feel any different and no bleeding or anything. I was told it was unlikely I would feel rough after first tablets and they were right.
The second tablets you take 2 days later, so for me it was Saturday morning. They basically cause contractions. I took an anti emetic, paracetamol and ibuprofen before taking the tablets which you insert into the vagina (4 tabs). I lay on the sofa waiting for it to start. It took maybe 3 or 4 hours before pain and bleeding kicked in. I then took dihydrocodeine which really helped. I ended up rushing to the bathroom a few times with this need to push. The contents basically suddenly came out. This need to push happened repeatedly. Everything at this stage is so small so its hard to know what is what but I collected it anyway in case helpful for testing of chromosomal issues. There was also huge blood clots and lots of bleeding. By the evening I felt better and was pottering around with a hot water bottle still and took another dihydrocodeine which also helped me sleep.
Today is Sunday and i feel fine. No pain and the clots seem to have stopped. Its now like a normal period. I have even managed to walk the dog for an hour and push a buggy around.
Overall its been ok. Obviously a horrible experience but glad it was only afternoon to early evening of pain. I didnt expect to be able to go for a long walk etc the next day but I'm pretty much back to normal now.
Ive never had a MMC before but this is miscarriage number 6. I had three at 6 weeks before having my son (who is 15 mths) and now I've had another three in the last year, with this one being the most advanced. Tests all normal but I'm 42. I guess it's a numbers game now.
Anyway hope this is helpful for ladies out there in similar situation X
