Miscarriage after IVF (6 weeks)

Hi my sister had IVF and a positive pregnancy test, but the HCG blood test wasn’t high enough and a few days later a miscarriage was confirmed.
Shes stopping all her current medication (progesterone) etc and is expecting to naturally start bleeding and hoping it will pass. I’m just wondering firstly, what to expect (will it be just like a period; or about more?) and secondly, what can I do to help, what could I perhaps get for her to make things easier? If you have experienced this is there anything that would have made you feel better? I’m so sorry and heartbroken for everyone having been through this it’s so painful. Just want to help if I can. Thanks so much xx

Personally mine was way heavier than a period and a lot more painful physically. It took a toll on me physically that everytime I went to the loo I could see more tissue and blood coming out. I also bled for nearly 2 weeks and it was still incomplete and ended up with a D&C. What you can do will depend on what your sister wants. Personally I didn’t want people around except my partner. But parents did come by with food we could just reheat up as and when we felt up to it and some of my fav treats. Other than that and be there when she is ready to talk about it there is not much more you can do.

So sorry this has happened - she is very lucky to have a sister like you 💕

Everyone is different. For me I had a couple of days of very light period like bleeding, built up to intense cramps which lasted around 3-4hours with bleeding and passing tissue which I went between sitting on the toilet/thick pads. Bleeding like a period can go on for a couple of weeks after.

I would say hot water bottle/heat pads, lots of sanitary pads (thick/large), sugary snacks, ibuprofen and paracetamol. If she’s not already been given it I would recommend having stronger painkillers such as codeine prescribed by her GP as most people experience a short period of intense cramps/contractions which is too much for over the counter medication

lots of love to you both xxxx
