Follow up mmc scan - what happens next

Hi all,
10 days ago i had an nhs scan at 8 week confirming a gestational sac only. I'm anticipating the worst, as i'm confident in my dates, that at our follow up appointment next week after a 2 week wait the scan will show the same and no progress (at 10-weeks). It's been a long horrible wait, so i now want it over with.
I don't want to wait for mother nature to do her thing, as if i make it to next weeks scan, it will be 2 weeks and my body wont have miscarried naturally.
I want to know, what will be options be? And will i be able to start them on the same day, or will i need to wait and return?
Keen at this point to know what will happen, and start to try to move on.
Thanks in advance,

Hello

Firstly I’m so sorry you’re going through this, it really is just heartbreaking I’ve been there. I was scanned to be told no heartbeat now and told to come back in ten days despite already being scanned at my IVF clinic too. By this point I was beside myself and didn’t want to wait mine was a missed miscarriage . I was due to fly so I said I cannot just wait and this happen while I’m away so they booked me in for a D&C although this wasn’t immediate took around a week and they did say I may miscarry at home … I didn’t and went into hospital they gave me a tablet to start uterus dilating and then went into for surgery. It was absolutely the best thing for me but at the same time truly heartbreaking . I’m thinking of you if you want anything else please contact me

I’m so sorry, it’s the worst thing to be going through. Sending you love and strength.
with my MMC, it was found at the 12 week scan. I made the decision then that I would opt for a D&C which they scheduled for the v next day, as long as there were no emergency ops I would be the first patient. I was so grateful that I didn’t have to wait, it was heartbreaking. They gave me some pills for the evening to take before surgery. The hospital were v kind and happy to go with my wishes of not wanting to wait, so I would say talk everything through with them. I was given the option to leave things to happen naturally, take the pills which would speed things up, or have the D&C. I was glad I made the surgery decision as for me, the waiting was the worst part. I was sore for a while but it’s nothing compared to the emotional pain. It’s the worst thing.

Thanks both, i really appreciate it. So sorry to hear you've been through it too.

Is it normally a choice of pills or D&C, or is one recommended over the other? I'm nervous at the risks online of a D&C.
Thanks

Wait for things to happen naturally, pills or D&C were the choices I was given. There are risks, but my mindset was, I wanted the physical part to be over with, and with the pills or waiting, there can be a chance that you may need a D&C to ‘complete’ the process anyway, so in my head, I was most willing to have that option. I was lucky, in that my D&C was successful and I had very minimal symptoms or issues from it, but I know that’s not the same for everyone.

@ByPoisedTurtleso sorry to hear you’re going through this. I had four MCs before having my second two months ago and I needed a D&C for two of these. I totally get not wanting to wait and just to get the surgery “over with”.

I wasn’t given a choice for the first one as to whether I had a D&C as there were other complications (suspected molar confirmed by histology post D&C).

The second I was given a choice but like @moanamovieI didn’t want the risk of the pills not working properly and needing a D&C anyway prolonging the grief even further.

Both mine were done quickly (within 48 hours of confining they were needed post second scan) and I was home that day. I didn’t find the recovery particularly hard (physically at least - mentally was a whole different ballgame).

once again I’m so sorry you’re having to go through this - it’s shit quite frankly.

I’m so sorry you’re going through this @ByPoisedTurtle. I think everywhere is slightly different but I’ve always been offered all 3 managements. I’ve had 3 expectant management miscarriages where I waited for it to happen and my last one was surgical management to get the embryo tested. I got booked in the next day (after my scan confirming) for bloods and to go through forms and then had the surgical management the morning after that. I was very well looked after and the first person in which made the morning easier as there wasn’t much waiting around. I had some heavier bleeding and a bit of pain around 3 days later, assuming from some retained tissue, but it was still a relatively easy and pain free procedure.
Personally, having been through the pain of miscarrying at home three times and assuming the tablet would be similar, I would go for the surgery again. But I totally understand the worries behind that and only do what you are comfortable with.
The person who scans you should be able to go through all management scenarios and risks with you, make sure you take the time to ask them any questions and go through all of your concerns with them, I found them to be very helpful.
