Miscarriage of one twin - anyone had similar?

A couple of weeks I started bleeding - at around 5 weeks pregnant. A scan showed two gestational sacs and yolks and as the bleeding had stopped I was told to come back in 10days time. The bleeding returned as did very severe stomach cramps. This went on for a week and I ended up in hospital on morphine. A scan last week (7 weeks) showed an incomplete miscarraige of one of the embryos but the other had a heartbeat. The doctor said that whilst this is positive there were other bad signs - I still had a lot of blood clots to pass and the surviving embryo was low in the uterus (though higher than the clots). I was told to expect more bleeding and go back for another scan in a fortnight. I have not bled since and my pregnancy symptoms have intensified (mild nausea, tiredness, thirsty) - which I am taking as a good sign. Has anyone had anything similar and the pregnancy gone full term?

Not with so many symptoms as you, but yes, my last pregnancy was a twin one but one egg did not develop properly and I lost it at 9 weeks. Cue much passing of red blood, followed about a week later by the most groteque passing of vast quantities of brown blood. I went on to have further problems in the pregnancy, but ds3 was born and is now a healthy 5 year old.

I think I would agree with you that an intensity of pregnancy symptoms is a good sign. Hopefully the scan you have in a fortnight will put your mind at rest. I can remember the waiting for each successive scan played havoc on my nerves...

Yes, I have.

My DS was originally a twin (IVF pregnancy). My first scan showed one healthy foetus, and one that was a bit small with a slightly slower heart-rate. A week or so later I had a big bleed, and a repeat scan showed blood around the smaller foetus. It's heart was still beating, but it hadn't grown. The bleeding continued, and a scan a couple of weeks later showed that the smaller foetus had died, while the larger one was growing normally.

Eventually the bleeding stopped - I think it went on till I was about 13 weeks - and the healthy baby grew into a great big boy who is going to be 3 in August.

This situation is actually relatively common in IVF circles.

All the best
