Taking aspirin to help prevent miscarriage

hello - I have just found out I am pregnant again after 3 miscarriages. Although I am happy I am also really apprehensive that this one will not work either. I was in the process of having tests done and now they have to stop. I spoke to my doctor about taking aspirin even though I have not had positive results back for sticky blood disease. He said it was fine to take it but I wondered if anyone else has done this and what advice they were given. I don't want to harm myself or my baby obviously.

Honey, I'm really sorry. I can only imagine how horrible you must be feeling.

Like Scotlass I have just had my 3rd mc though I took aspirin this time. So I'm interested in what justbeme said about St Mary's advising 2 baby aspirin, and that worked for her 5th & 6th time around (I think, though it is on the other page, so need to check).

It is prob too early for you to be thinking about it, but maybe that's a glimmer of hope for you? god, it's a long road isn't it.... I really hope this works out for you.

Kind thoughts to you x

Yes I was on baby-aspirin until 36 weeks in two of my pregnancies after miscarriages.

summeratlast · 24/09/2008 22:19

Hi

I also went to St Mary's after 3 mc. While not pregnant, nothing to be found but when I got pregnant they kept testing my blood and then discovered my blood had started clotting. I was originally prescribed 1 x junior asprin, which was then upped to 2 x junior asprin a day during my whole pregnancy and now I have a beautiful daughter. Surely these doctors aren't just advising low doses of asprin and then not testing the blood regularly? What if you have to increase the dose or need heparin?? Insist on the best care!

So sorry to hear your news! That is so so sad. I have suffered with 3 miscarriages in the past. The first at 15 weeks, the second at 11 weeks and the most recent at 10 1/2 weeks. The last miscarriage was a little under 3 months ago. There have been heart beats in all 3 of the babies. I am young (26), fit and healthy. I have been to see a miscarriage specialist at my local hospital who has advised me to take a 75mg aspirin daily from the day I get a + preg test. I have had blood work done to test for abnormalities and blood clotting disorders but these take up to 8 weeks to come back!! Very nervous waiting for the results as I could be pregnant fingers crossed!! I am very fertile and get pregnant easily, just can't seem to hang on to them I am prepared to try anything! Fingers crossed the aspirin will work and allow me to have a healthy pregnancy and healthy baby at the end of the 9 months!! Good luck to everyone on here! It has been such an inspiration reading all the stories from everyone. There is hope after all Thanks guys xxx

So sorry to hear your news honey8. Don't think you get used to it, it seems to feel worse each time. Maybe you need a higher dose of aspirin like one of the other lady did - it worked for her? I am on mc number 3, scan last week showed a collapsing sac and no heartbeat, just waiting for the mc to happen naturally now. Met my husband later in life, i'm 38 and at times lose a little hope. Mine happen at around 5 weeks every time, due to have bloods etc but have been told that they do not often find any problems or cause. Hoping to give aspirin a go and praying for a bit of good luck. Although it's not nice, it gives some comfort to know you are not the only one going through this, I sometimes feel why me, there are lots of happy endings on this site, you and I will be one of them soon so don't give up, I won't....

Honey8 just wanted to say how sorry I am to hear your news. Found out yesterday that I had mmc at 6/7 weeks (3 time this has happened to me). Dr suggested tests and also taking low dose aspirin next time so it's good to see it seems to have helped others.

Hi, i've sadly just had my 12th, YES 12TH, MC. Although I have 2 perfectly healthy children already (7 year old girl and 5 year old boy) i'm terribly cut up. I've just been reading all your posts about taking asprin, I have often wondered about this but never tried it. I've only just been referred for test but been told I could be waiting atleast 6 months for my initial appointment. I can't bare to wait that long. My husband and I are so desperate to add to our family and seems luck is against us at the moment.
I would really like to hear your advice on taking asprin to help prevent any more MC.
I haven't had ANY tests yet for 'sticky blood syndroome' yet, but can't help but think this may be the prob, as (sorry to go into detail, but we're all woman on here) when I have my periods they are often heavy and seem quite sticky? Could this be my problem? All your advice would be a great help. Thanks xx

Try St Mary's, Paddington (meant to be the best).

IggitheImpaler · 28/10/2010 00:05

I was initially going to take aspirin, but following other threads I read on here, the book on miscarriage by Lesley Regan, and my GP telling me not to ("you'd need to see a consultant") I decided against it. If your blood doesn't have a clotting disorder, then are we at risk of making it too thin?
It is all so confusing.

obes · 28/06/2012 14:41

Hi. I had a miscarriage, then two children then three miscarriages (all pretty early). I did not test positive for anything when i saw a consultant and had tests, but he put me on aspirin for my next pregnancy as he said that he didn't think they knew enough about the condition yet and that it couldn't hurt. I went on to have two more babies , taking children's aspirin until 32 weeks for both pregnancies, and I am back on it again for my (surprise) 5th pregnancy. My midwife does seem to think it works, but I WOULD NOT take it without being prescribed (they shouldn't sell you aspirin if you are pregnant anyway). I checked before each pregnancy as to whether I should take it again. I hope that things go well for you in this pregnancy. After all my miscarriages, i found it very hard to believe that I wouldn't have another one and was apprehensive until the 12 week scans, so can understand how you are feeling.xx

Honey am so sorry to hear this happened. Sometimes the asprin thing works, and sometimes the problem could be a random genetic thing. I have always explained it to DD as the baby's puzzle is missing a piece. I have had 7 mcs over the past 7 years, since my gorgeous DD was born. But it can work out. am 38wks now with no.2 so there is hope. they never worked out what was causing mine either. Look after yourself and please don't let it get you down too much. sending you huge MN hugs x

Good afternoon ladies, I need some help/suggestions from you seen that many are or have been in the same boat.
I'm 37 years old now, I had 2 weeks ago a miscarriage at 10 weeks and another 2 years ago at 8 weeks, both with huge lower cramping and heavy bleeding, with admission to the a&e and after gynaecology unit.
I'm fed up of not been taking seriously here in Uk where I live because it was and is not simple for a woman to lose all babies like this without an explanation and no further investigations from NHS until i'll be pregnant for the 3rd time (if this happens).
I'm originally from Italy where they told me that they would start investigations after 2 miscarriages and they would suggest to risky pregnancies hormone therapies and baby aspirin. Sorry but in Uk the health system sucks, and I'd happily go back to Italy if I wouldn't have a good job here, I'm not happy about Nhs. They also suggested for risky pregnancies to stop working in the first crucial 3 months as an early maternity leave also because I do night shifts and can be tiring..how does all this work in Uk according to the laws?
During the last miscarriage I also had surgery in total anaesthetic to clean my uterus from the remains that could infect me internally, not nice at all I can assure.
What do you suggest to do? It's not easy for me to get pregnant, it took 2 years from the last miscarriage and I don't want to be an old mum for my future child (if it will be the case).
Do you suggest to go privately to check my thyroid levels, progesterone in case of hormone imbalance, sticky blood deficiency? Anyone did this? Is that very expensive paying out of my pockets?
Thank you in advance to all the mums who will respond with suggestions and advices, our strength is in sharing our knowledge. Hugs!

I’ve wondered about this, I had a miscarriage recently and my DH and I are trying again, and I’ve bought some baby aspirin and am debating whether to take them or not if I get pregnant again. I’ve read so many things about people starting to take baby aspirin and carrying to term after multiple miscarriages, and just wonder if ya worth giving it a go, and if it can do any harm? If anyone else knows much about this it would be great. I don’t want to have to go through more miscarriages for a consultant to say take aspirin, when I could have already tried it you know? Anyone had any positive outcomes post miscarriage after taking aspirin? Thanks x

Sorry for all your losses ,

I have 4 healthy children ages 22 17 13 and 7. In 2009 I got pregnant with my 4th everything was going well till 24 week my scan showed that baby boy was 2 week smaller and my amniotic fluid was very low. So to rule all out I had a amniocentesis and put on bed rest for 2 weeks. All came back healthy baby with nothing wrong only my amniotic fluid had gotten lower at .4cm is how they described it. They told me I had no leak and the baby would not survive much longer this way. They gave me the option to give birth early and see the out come or just wait it out till baby died inside me. We chose early birth at 7mth, 27weeks. Unfortunately he did not survive the labor. The hospital did autopsy and no abnormalities were found on my placenta or baby. Fast forward 6 mths later and I got pregnant with 5th baby. They advised me to take baby aspirin and I did and have a healthy 7 year old. Fast forward another 6year and we wanted 1 more to complete our family. I never thought to take baby aspirin again so I didnt. At 10week scan no heart beat and baby was measuring 6 weeks. We tried again and it worked all was good at first scan and every visit I heard a heart beat until 19 weeks something didn't feel right so I went in and the couldn't find a heartbeat and baby measuring 13 weeks no amniotic fluid left. I had every test done that could be done even went and saw a hematologist/oncologist with no out come only that I was 100% healthy. They were thinking a blood clotting disorder but nope. Well here we are and I'm 5w3d and I started taking baby aspirin hopefully it works. I go for my first scan in 3 weeks. Only God knows what he had planned for us.
Has anyone else gone into second trimester with their loss. Judt trying to figure this all out.
