Low AMH and natural conception – does it affect miscarriage or TFMR risk?

Hi everyone,
I’d really appreciate hearing your experiences or thoughts around low AMH and natural conception.

I’m 36 and have a 3.5-year-old. Before he was born, we had four early losses. Since then, we’ve had a chemical pregnancy and a termination for medical reasons.

I had my AMH tested at 32 – even though I wasn’t pursuing IVF – and was told at the time (and still now, by both my GP and the consultant at fetal medicine) that AMH isn’t considered a reliable indicator for natural conception.

That said, I’m increasingly seeing low AMH discussed online and by clinics, often with the message that time is running out or that it significantly reduces chances. This has started to play on my mind — not just whether it affects conception, but also whether low AMH could be contributing to our history of miscarriage and the TFMR.

Has anyone been told that low AMH can impact egg quality to the extent it increases the risk of miscarriage or abnormalities? Or is that a misunderstanding?

I’m trying to figure out if I’m focusing on the wrong thing, or if this could actually be part of the picture. I’m finding it hard not to feel like I’m just chasing something that’s no longer realistic.

Would really value hearing others’ experiences — especially if you’ve conceived naturally with low AMH, or have had similar concerns about miscarriage or loss.

Thanks so much for reading. x

Anecdotally - I had my AMH levels tested while TTC my third at 38. I was told it was low. I had two miscarriages (one at 10 weeks, one v v early so more like a CP), but now have a healthy one year old. I obviously don’t know whether this was driven by the AMH. I did have tests at the recurrent miscarriage clinic after the second miscarriage and was given injections for the first 12 weeks of my successful pregnancy. I really hope it works out for you, I remember how stressful it all was.

Hi there, my AMH was measured (I paid for Hertility) 18 months ago and it was 0.36. I was told to try to get pregnant within the next 6 months or that would be it extremely unlikely for me. We decided not to try. I have not changed my diet, take any supplements, acupuncture or anything like that. I did join a gym but continued drinking in the same way (3/4 times a week). On holiday this summer we had sex outside of my fertile window according to Natural Cycles and I got pregnant. I hope women with a low AMH score take positivity and hope from my story, I was literally told it would be extremely unlikely and changed nothing and it still happened. Good luck xxx
