Recurrent miscarriage clinic

Hi,

I have my first appointment at the recurrent miscarriage clinic, NHS after 2 miscarriages before 8 weeks in a year. I’ve been trying since Jan 24 for another child, I have a 16 year old.

can anyone tell me what to expect? What tests they’ll do? I’m a type 1 diabetic which is controlled okay and I have an under active thyroid which I’ve never had issues with.

Im just so impatient and want them to start straight away, is it a long process?

I had a medical termination in 2007 for a major defect at 22 weeks, then a miscarriage, then my son who has a major heart defect and now 15 years later, 2 miscarriages.

im just so fed up 😞 wish i didn’t get the urge to want another.

Hi OP, I’m sorry to hear about the struggles you’re going through. The good news is that the recurrent miscarriage clinic may be able to help, the bad news is that yes- it’s a long process. I know a few women who have been referred and have ended up paying to go for recurrent miscarriage investigations privately because there were 12-16 weeks sometimes between appointments, it can be ridiculous. I know one of my friends had her initial appointment then had a 12 week wait to go back to have some tests done, and then a 10 week wait to have the appointment to get the results of those tests- results which would have been back within days but this was the next available appointment. It is crazy.

They can check hormone levels, do bloods, scans etc, and then assess the results. If anything is picked up then they can create a plan for you.

From what I have heard from others the clinics are more useful if younger, purely because if for example you are over 40 then your chance of miscarriage each pregnancy is 1 in 2, and around 60% of eggs are abnormal over 40, so they can be quicker to rule it as an age issue than they would for a 25 year old, but it’s still worth a try.

Privately they do a much wider range of tests in a much quicker time so if at all affordable I would recommend going privately.

Thank you so much for replying and letting me know. I have been looking at Nuffield health and just debating whether I book an initial consultation with a private doctor.

From what you’ve said, I think it’s probably the right decision for me - time is not on my side.

The costs are horrendous but I’ll work it out. Or at least discuss with someone which tests I can do and rule out.

Thank you so much!

@Annebern im so sorry to jump on your post. How long from being referred to the clinic were you contacted and provided with an appointment? I asked my GP to refer me after 2 and she was hesitant saying they wouldn’t accept after 2, but did so anyway. But I haven’t heard anything xx

Hi, I had my miscarriage on 31/03 and I have a telephone appointment on 26/06.

They told me it would take 6 months. I had a really good doctor for something else and I’d mentioned the wait and I actually think they may have sped it up for me because 3 months for an appointment after a referral is quite rare. I hope that helps!
