I think I’m having a miscarriage - can anyone offer advice?

Hi, apologies in advance for the long post. I’m 5 weeks pregnant and I think I’m miscarrying. So last Saturday I started having the most horrendous pains - like contractions, I was spotting and passed a very small clot but the pain stopped on the Sunday and by Monday I’d stopped bleeding. I rang local midwife unit who basically said nothing they could do unless I’m soaking a pad an hour and do a pregnancy test on 2 weeks. I did a pregnancy test this week and it still showed positive but I’m aware that’s just by HGC levels.

fast forward to today where I’ve had cramping again but more similar to a period pain. Now the last time I was pregnant and carried to term I had this too so I was slightly more hopeful but just gone to the toilet and im bleeding again. Not heaving but bright red and a few small clots.

I’m guessing I am having a miscarriage? If anyone is awake and can offer advice or just chat I’d really appreciate it.

My youngest is in bed next to me sleeping, my husbands on nights (emergency services) and I don’t want to upset him at work so it’s just me and my thoughts.

I think you probably are miscarrying. I’m very sorry. Can you call 111 to ask for advice? Do you have any close friend or relative nearby?

sheknowsitstoolate · 01/06/2025 22:29

I would ring 111 and ask what to do. Is there anyone who could stay with your son if you have to go anywhere?

Sorry you’re going through this. Contact your local hospital in the morning and ask for the Early pregnancy unit and tell them you bare bleeding and that you have a positive test.
they should be able to organise an early scan for you x

I'm going through the same thing atm. I don't have any advice to offer, just know you're not alone ❤️

They’ve just said unless the bleeding fills a sanitary pad every half hour then there’s nothing they can/will do. Too early to detect a heart beat on a scan and to do a pregnancy test in 2 weeks.

I can ring my inlaws if I need to but I’d rather not worry them.

I’m acceptant of that fact I’m likely miscarrying. Just last weekend the pain was so bad but hardly any bleeding and I just got my hopes up a bit.

I’m so sorry, it’s so difficult to not know what’s going on and having to ‘wait and see’. I’ve been there before myself, I always tried to make sure I had a bag with bits in like a phone charger, change of clothes and snack etc just on standby in case I needed to go and get checked out. More to feel like I was in control of something and it was something practical I could do really. Not sure if that’s helpful to be honest but I always needed to feel like I’d taken charge of the situation when I couldn’t predict how things would work out.

Wishing you all the best Flowers

Having MC 5 times and always bled to second trimester for some unknown reason, the difference between MC or not is the pain alongside bleeding. I always knew if I was having period like cramps and bleeding it was a MC. So I’m sorry it does sound like you are.
At such an early stage, there isn’t much the EPU can do either to stop it. They may offer a scan to check but will do a urine test before hand, if that’s negative they won’t scan you. I’m sorry! It’s bringing back horrible memories for me, time is a healer x

Thank you all for the replying and for the kind words.

Ive had several miscarriages before but I’ve always bled much more. I just thought this was different,

Ive got some bits packed incase I need them and Ive just sorted the kids uniforms and school bags out in case in-laws have them in the morning,

Ive had some pain killers too but the pain seems to be subsiding but unfortunately still appear to be bleeding a little - not loads but a few small clots too 😕

Stay close to home and be kind to yourself. Take some painkillers as it can be like a bad period. Don’t be scared if you get a big amount. It’s not nice but it’s natural. A pregnancy test will take a while to go negative. Try again as you are very fertile, you do not need to wait (unless you want to), it’s an old wives tale that you need a break or even a full cycle - a top consultant told me that, and my DD2 is proof (MC4, no period and pregnant again). Sending a hug.

NotjustCo2 · 01/06/2025 22:43

Ah I see you’ve done this before. I did have a big bleed with DC1, but no pain.

springruns · 01/06/2025 22:46

Thank you @NotjustCo2, the pain has subsided and is thankfully no where near what it was like last weekend which I would have compared to actual contractions.

I’ve got a water bottle and going to try and sleep but I doubt I’ll be able to.

im please that you managed to conceive after MC4 - that fills me with some hope x

Aww, I'm sorry. Been through this a few times before, and it helped me to think its just a late period rather than a pregnancy 😘Take a strong painkiller to get you through the night x

Morning, just wanted to say thank you again to everyone who messaged last night. I’ve bled most of the night - like a regular period but the pain has stopped for now. Thank you for last night - it really helped ❤️❤️
