Fertility after a chemical pregnancy

Hi all,

feeling a little despondent here. I had a chemical pregnancy last week after 16 months of TTC 😔 finally felt like a dark cloud had been lifted only for it to return. Just wondering is there any truth behind increased fertility after a loss? Any success stories after a chemical pregnancy would be appreciated.

thank you xx

Hi! I believe the rumour that fertility is increased after a chemical pregnancy or miscarriage. I had a miscarriage in November and then got pregnant in February. It’s finally stuck and I’m 10 weeks now. I think getting pregnant and then losing the pregnancy primes your uterus somehow.

I’m very sorry about your chemical pregnancy. Look after yourself.

I know exactly how you feel. I got a BFP after 3 years last month, only to have an early MC at 6 weeks. It's soul destroying, it really is. I'd been trying 40 cycles since my previous MC (and had had a CP about 16 months in).

However, when TTC DD2, I had a CP after 8 months trying and then had a more successful BFP just four months later. One of my best friends had a successful pregnancy the very month after her CP when TTC #2 (and that was despite having to go through IVF for DC1).

There's little rhyme or reason, it seems. You just have to have luck on your side.

I had a CP after 16 months of trying (aged 38), pregnant 2 months later…my son is 2 next month. It felt awful at the time; like I would have to wait another 16 cycles or that it might not happen at all.

I had a chemical pregnancy and then got pregnant with my now 20 month old DS 2 cycles later.
I definitely think there’s something about it being the first 3 months after it your fertility is increased. I have two friends with similar takes.
Nothing is certain but I’ll cross my fingers that you get to have a similar story. It’s so hard 🌷

@Cheesetoastieesthank you so much! So kind of you xx

Hi @Ilovetobake2, I just had a chemical after 12 cycles TTC. I’ve read a study that showed women who’d had a chemical were more likely to conceive in the first 1-3 months, BUT my concern is whether women who’d took longer to conceive in the first place are. As in, I feel I’ve got some kind of fertility issue, which may have been the cause of the chemical (eg. Poor lining/implantation issues), whereas someone who conceived quickly might have had a chemical due to common chromosomal issues. So the research that says more likely to be fertile, I find hard to apply to my own situation. I’ll try and link the study though..

I tried for 36 cycles with zero conceptions then had a cycle of ivf that ended in miscarriage (turns out I had undiagnosed endo which effectively means my tubes are tied and that’s why I could never conceive). I was never going to conceive naturally but my second embryo transfer did stick.

I think you’re right basically. A chemical or miscarriage won’t make your overall fertility problems better if there’s a pathology. My miscarriage would never have fixed my tubes.

However, miscarriages and chemicals do improve endometrial receptivity so that subsequent embryos stick better (if you can make embryos). So as long as there are no glaring issues then it can improve success rates.

Hi @Ilovetobake2,

Just saw your thread and thought I’d pop on. How are you keeping? I had a suspected chemical pregnancy in February and my ovulation has been so irregular since. I had text book cycles up until that point, but have struggled to catch ovulation since - with heavy and irregular periods thrown into the mix too. The joys! Currently using CB digital OPK and today on CD 25 I am onto my 7th day of a flashing smiley, still no peak detected - so disheartening. I suppose for some people a CP can increase fertility, but in my experience it’s caused havoc! Hopefully it’s better news at your end though! Keep going - our happy ending is hopefully just around the corner! X
