Positive tests post miscarriage

I had an MVM on 19 December. The clinic gave me a pregnancy test and told me to take it 3 weeks later, which I did. It was negative. My periods haven’t returned (I have PCOS and irregular periods so no surprise there) and I took a test on 28 Jan. It looked negative but there was a really faint line - so faint I thought I might be imagining it. I tested again today and got a faint positive again.

We last had sex on 10 Jan as I then got a horrible virus (so I know we’ve not done it since!) If this was a new pregnancy, it would surely be showing as a dark line by now? And it seems unlikely I would ovulate so soon after my MVM given my general history. So does this mean something went wrong with the surgery and my first test was as a false negative?

I’m so confused and not sure what to do now.

Not sure how to edit but that should say MVA not MVM. Basically the surgical removal of the pregnancy but under local anaesthetic rather than general.

Hello, I had an MVA at a similar time to you. If your tests are positive and not a new pregnancy would definitely contact your EPU that did the MVA and they should arrange to rescan you. I was still getting positive tests 3 weeks post MVA and had retained products, I had to have D&C under general to remove them yesterday. But if there is only a really small amount and it’s not vascular you are most likely to not need a further surgery and your next period should clear it out! But definitely best to get this checked and be safe as retained products could cause an infection xx

@KT199 Thank you. I tried to call them earlier but they’re not open until Monday (the line diverts to main hospital but they only deal with emergencies). I’ll phone them back Monday and see what they say. Just when you think it’s over… Hope you’re doing ok after your D&C

I am sorry for your loss
I had a mmc at 12 weeks with a D&C.
Had sex once a week later and got pg
Periods never returned so I was effectively pg for a year!

Hi, I'm sorry for your loss..what do you mean by not vascular? I had to have an emergency d and c in November after two failed rounds of medical management and a hemorrhage. They came saying that when they scanned me it was vascular. What does that actually mean?

It’s the medical term for the tissue having a blood supply, I also had no clue and had to ask.. apparently it’s very normal but does mean you have to have intervention. I wasn’t told any more so I’m not sure if there is more to it. I’m really sorry no one explained that to you. It’s very hard in the moment though to even ask these questions, every time I’ve been in that hospital it feels like an out of body experience!

I know, it’s not an easy ride at all. But defo get in touch to be on the safe side. You could also try track your tests to see if they darken in case it is a new pregnancy!

I am doing okay thank you, really just hope it has put an end to this experience!!

Update: I have started bleeding today. Phoned the clinic and they said this could be an early miscarriage of a new pregnancy. I suggested earlier test could’ve been a false negative and they said it could be but didn’t seem convinced. Either way they’ve advised that I wait for this bleeding to stop in a few days (assuming this is now my period) and then retest. If it’s still positive then I can call back.

I’m now feeling even worse as I have no idea whether this is just my period returning or whether this is my 4th miscarriage. I wish I’d never tested now so I don’t even have to think about it.

Aw I’m so sorry, this is a really difficult thing to go through and made harder by not completely knowing what exactly is going on. I’m glad you reached out to the hospital but it’s a shame they couldn’t offer any support or answers. Take care of yourself xxx
