Do you need progesterone supplements to maintain a pregnancy?

Hi all,

So I recently got my bloods taken on what we believe is 7dpo and then again at around 11dpo. Both sets came back at 19.1 and 18.1 nmol for progresterone. So below the 30nmol recommendation.

My doctor wasn't concerned and just said - see how you go. But the more I read, the more likely a miscarriage is if progesterone is low.

I'm wondering if anyone managed to remain pregnant with levels this low? Or if you advise anything I do?

I'm 4weeks, almost 5 weeks. So it's still early. But I know I'm going to be super anxious until week 12 (if I get that far) and I know that won't be helping either.

Hi. I am 8 w 3 days today. I just got a scan this morning as i was having a bleeding and immediately called epu. The baby is developing all normal, has a heartbeat and the measurements they gave me were 9 w 1 day. They saw a 12mm hematome below the pregnancy which is not affecting the baby. They put me on progesterone until 16 weeks pregnant. I will start tonight and i hope it will be all good in the end. I didn't have any blood tests or anything. And also bleeding stopped. It was a larger blood spot.

Could you ask if they will prescribe them privately for piece of mind?
It would do no harm to take them even if you don’t really need them. I used them on a completely normal natural pregnancy without a blood test to see if it was even necessary because I asked for them. I had used them previously and thought they helped, the clinic said they couldn’t give on nhs but if I wanted to I could buy them. They only cost£100/£200 for the course from a place that did both nhs and private.

I'd look up Dr Jen Gunter and Dr Jolene Brighton- they're good on hormones.

I was trying to see if I had progesterone test results from pre pregnancy (I had 2 MCs and was prescribed progesterone in the 2nd pregnancy after an early 1st trimester bleed. They didn't do any blood tests so it wasn't on the basis of knowing my progesterone levels, it's just NICE protocol after 2 MCs/1 MC + threatened MC. I took progesterone in 3rd pregnancy from the positive test til 14 weeks and had a health baby. I would love to know whether progesterone would be necessary for me next time as I think it exacerbated my tiredness and nausea.

Any way you can ask another doctor, or ask your doctor why, with low progesterone, they think you'll be OK?

I don't think that's quite true - there are oots of potential side effects which are quite unpleasant albeit not necessarily damaging in the medium/long term. But I definitely wouldn't want to take them unnecessarily.
I had pretty debilitating nausea and tiredness and other gave posted in here about thrush/extreme vaginal irritation.

It’s difficult as it’s not an exact science, some prescribe and some don’t. I’ve have miscarriages both on and off them.
