Ashman's syndrome after MVA

Hi everyone,

I've been googling and have got myself in a bit of a panic so posting here for others experiences/ advice /reassurance.

I was diagnosed with a MMC in July, first pregnancy. Had the surgical management MVA on 23 July. Seemed to go well, minimal bleeding and a negative pregnancy test 2 weeks after.

I think I ovulated about 3 weeks after procedure then had a very very light 4-day bleed a month after the MVA. Nothing like my usual periods which are heavy with cramps.

I ovulated again around 10 September and since then have had period like symptoms but no bleeding at all. Before all this I had a regular 31 day cycle and was told ovaries and womb all look healthy.

Essentially I'm worried about Asherman's syndrome. I seem to have all the symptoms and haven't had a proper period in the nearly 11 weeks since the MVA. I've done loads of pregnancy tests all negative. I'm about to turn 39 and so desperate to try again. Everything I've read means I could struggle to conceive now or have to wait a year. Any advice or similar stories?

Hello

I’m sorry to hear about your experiences. I don’t have advice but going through something similar, except I know it’s Ashermans.

I had a second ERPC for retained tissue at the end of August and have ovulated twice since. I had no period at all just some cramps 2 weeks after the first ovulation, and am now 2 weeks after the second ovulation so waiting to see if there is any bleeding. I have a doctors appt booked for the week after next which I will keep if no bleeding.

My second ERPC was done under hysteroscopy and the doctor said she found scarring there which she tried to remove, but I don’t know if it was successful or if the scarring has come back. I’m expecting it to be quite a difficult process to find any answers/solutions.

Thank you for replying I really appreciate it. Sorry to hear you're in this situation as well. I'm going to make a doctor's appointment tomorrow to hopefully get a referral or some investigation. Can I ask whether you're in the UK? I'm worried the the NHS will move slowly. Really hope AF comes soon for you.

Hello

Yes I’m in the UK. I was going to ask for a referral for further investigation but don’t know what they will say. I was also going to ask for a blood test to confirm ovulation which I think they can do. I do have private medical insurance through work so will try and get referred through them but I am not sure if it will be covered.

@Summersun91 I saw my GP today and she has referred me for an ultrasound to check my womb lining but I've read ultrasounds won't pick up scarring so we'll see. She's also requested blood tests to check hormone levels. I feel a bit better just taking some action.

Is ERPC the same as an MVA do you know? I've read Asherman's is more likely with a D&C but I'm pretty sure I had an MVA although it doesn't say on my discharge notes.
Hope you're doing ok and are able to get some answers.

Hello

I’m glad that your doctor is taking you seriously and referring you for tests. As you say I don’t think ultrasounds pick up scarring, but it is a good start and they may pick up on something else.
I think ERPC is the same, but it was under general anaesthetic whereas MVA is under local.
I’ve had some spotting the last few days so I think I will wait and monitor for another month before seeing my GP.
Hope you are able to get some answers or even better your period arrives soon.

Thanks for replying again @Summersun91 no sign of my period yet. I had what I thought was an MVA but under general anesthetic. There wasn't another option in my Trust. Apparently it does vary depending on where you are.
I've got my ultrasound on Wednesday morning which I'm perversely looking forward to. Hoping for some insight at least, I'm better when I know as much as I can.
Hoping your spotting continues to develop too.
