Has anyone been prescribed Heparin (without aspirin) after recurrent miscarriage?

My fertility journey is coming up to two years, which is when I had my first miscarriage. I’ve now had four miscarriages in total (three of them were MMC), and during this time, Mumsnet has been a lifeline to me. I have spent hours and hours reading other people’s posts for reassurance and to feel less alone. This is my first time posting though.

I’ve had so many tests and nothing has been found to be wrong. I had a “subtle” septum removed from my uterus in January - but then then went on to have another miscarriage four months later (this turned out to be a “genetically normal” pregnancy, so no known reason for it).

Anyway, I’m now 9 weeks into my fifth pregnancy. I am under a recurrent miscarriage clinic, which prescribed me daily heparin injections (but no aspirin) which I started three weeks ago after an early scan showed a viable pregnancy with a heartbeat. I’ve not been able to find any other examples of people who have gone down this route WITHOUT a known blood clotting disorder and I’d love to hear if anyone has any experience (good or bad) of using heparin injections alone.

I would also welcome any stories from people who have had several unexplained miscarriages, and then gone onto have a successful pregnancy without any intervention. Just for a bit of hope (which is in short supply these days).

Thank you for reading and thank you to this community for the unknowing support you’ve given over the last two years.

No.but I am hoping to have injections and maybe not asprin at my next ivf transfer. I have a very sensitive stomach lining and worry asprjn won't be good for that but I would really want to try a blood thinner.

Hope it helps x

I had a very similar experience to you. Referred to recurrent miscarriage unit after 3 miscarriages with no medical reason found as to why. I miscarried a 4th time but the 5th time my pregnancy was viable and I injected heparin daily. I also had to take a suppository daily but it was so long ago now I can’t remember the name of it. My 5th pregnancy went well, I lost 2 more but my 8th went well too. I now have two fabulous teenagers. It was a difficult process at the time but worth it in the end. Xx

Jazz queen, so sorry for your losses. I cant say I've heard of anyone being put on heparin unless they have a blood clotting disorder. I've heard low dose aspirin suggested as it "may" help but not heparin unless there is a definite reason. I am sure they are prescribing it for good reason though and good luck with the pregnancy x

Me! Although not heparin, I'm on dalteparin (also known as fragmin). I have had 4 losses and was put on this the day after my positive test a few weeks back and I am now 9 weeks. No known clotting disorders but my consultant said it wouldn't hurt to try

Thank you so much for your response and best of luck with the IVF. Xx

Thank you for sharing your story - it’s comforting to know there’s hope, although of course I’m so sorry to hear you’ve had a similar experience. I wonder if you the suppository was progesterone? I’ve heard a lot about it and was hoping to try it (in a “let’s throw everything at it” manner) but my doctor said she would only prescribe it if I had bleeding, which I don’t. I have a scan on Wednesday so hoping for the best. Thanks again. X

Thanks for your message. I haven’t heard of it either which is why I was wondering if there were any examples of it being prescribed and successful. I have asked the doctor but I’m not still entirely sure on the answer! Something about helping implantation? Either way, it’s the first time I’ve tried anything at all so it feels better knowing we are trying something. X

Thanks so much! That’s interesting. I’ve not heard of dalteparin but it sounds very similar after a quick Google. Sounds like we are at the same stage. Are you under St Mary’s by any chance? Wishing you all the best for this pregnancy xx

I’m with you there. Trying something new always feels like there is renewed hope x

An update for anyone reading this in the future and wondering about the outcome (as I often do). Unfortunately the heparin doesn’t seem to have worked as I had a MMC confirmed at 9+3. It stopped growing at 8+4.
