Fifth miscarriage can steroids help

Going through my 5th miscarriage in a row. 3 have been early and 2 MMC after heartbeat seen despite bleeding and everything returning to normal. Tried aspirin heparin and progesterone. The only thing I haven’t tried is steroids as my clinic think it is more to do with my womb lining. Can anyone share experience of recurrent miscarriage and steroid use? I think if I lived closer to London I would have explored Dr S

Hi,

So sorry to hear of your losses. I had to have IVF/ICSI to conceive for what was thought to be only Male Factor Infertility. I had 6 miscarriages throughout that time and after the 4th one I had immune bloods taken which were known as Chicago Tests. They came back to show that I had elevated NK Cells, Factor V Leiden & MTHFR Gene mutation (homozygous).

I had another 2 cycles of IVF - with Clexane Injections, Progesterone, High Dose Folic acid and Prednisolone steroids.

That mix of drugs on top of my IVF gave me a beautiful little boy who is now 13!

Have you read the book by Dr Beer? 'Is your body baby friendly? Unexplained Infertility, Miscarriage...' it's a very good book and super informative with lots of info about steroids.

I'll be honest, I found the steroids tough going, not as tough as repeatedly losing babies but still difficult. I had trouble sleeping, but trouble staying awake, they also gave me a face like Rik Mayal in drop dead fred when he gets his head stuck in the fridge but they worked. On top of the other drugs involved in my protocol of course.

Personally, in your shoes, I would get the book and research your options.

I wish you the very best of luck.

@Ttcafterlosses

I'm very sorry to read that this is happening to you, OP.

Would it be possible for you to be referred to a specialist clinic such as the one at St Mary's?

Sorry for all your losses. I had 5 in total but once I was under the reoccurring miscarriage clinic in Epsom and fell pregnant, I carried fine so in my experience yes the steroids were what made the difference. Before I was on the steroids I was on aspirin and progesterone (after the 2nd miscarriage and still had a further 3).

Also the NHS had missed PCOS but dr S picked this up on my first visit at my scan!

It was very expensive and all together we probably spent £10-13k to include all steroids and infusions as well as the additional scans and appointments required during my pregnancy which considering I luckily fell pregnant the first month would have added up more. Otherwise you also have the steroids/meds and infusions whilst trying each month to pay for (n.b I also had the progesterone and aspirin prescribed on NHS so didn't pay for them). Just FYI if you are considering the clinic.

All the best 💐

OHiwish12,
I hope you dont mind me asking but I was wondering if it would have made it much less expensive to back to the NHS for scans, etc. Only asking for my own benefit to be honest, since I may well end up having to go down that route but really cant afford to do so financially.

Hi all thank you so much for all your responses, warm wishes and sharing your experiences.

I am sorry I have vanished on the thread. My current ‘miscarriage’ has turned out to be a pregnancy of unknown location so I was in hospital and will have to return every 48h for bloods, also waiting to have another scan to determine whether it’s ectopic or simply a non-viable pregnancy as they couldn’t determine today. I hope to reach out soon

Ttcafterlossrs - So sorry to hear you are going through this! I do hope you get a definitive answer soon x

Thank you so much. I’m still in limbo being monitored regularly, still bleeding and still hoping I don’t end up in emergency surgery. my mental health is in pieces, I can’t take any further time off work. The last 2 years are a cycle of false hope, loss and trauma. I was so determined when I first started bleeding to try to focus on the future and try different things moving forward but I don’t think I have it in me anymore but really appreciate the advice. I was considering Epsom but I live nowhere near London and more so how much more can I take I feel like I am on the verge of a breakdown inside but somehow trying to act normal on the outside
