Recurring early losses and Antiphospholipid Syndrome

I'm currently going through my 5th consecutive loss in the past 12 months. All have been between 4-5 mark (first one was 6 weeks). After the 4th loss, I did some bloods and was diagnosed with slightly elevated levels of Antiphospholipid syndrome so for this 5th pregnancy I have been on progesterone, aspirin 150mg and heparin (inhixa) from 13dpo found out I was pregnant at 9dpo.

Not quite sure where to go from here. Keep wondering if the heparin was started too late? Or there is another issue. Can someone please offer advice / or success story for a similar situation. The losses have made my cycles so long and irregular. Private clinic is pushing for IVF but not sure that is the route we need as we have no problem getting pregnant it's the staying pregnant that is the problem.

Is there further tests / medication I should be pushing for to help make the baby stick. TIA.

I'm so sorry that you're going through this, and also sorry that I can't help directly, but I think your best bet would be to speak to a fertility specialist via the NHS.

Hi @Skyr1, so sorry for your losses. Have you had any testing for immune issues/natural killer cells? I too have had numerous early losses - all before a heart rate was detected, and I'm on the same protocol as you plus a high level of prednisolone (steroids) which suppresses the immune system. Because I have high natural killer cells, they attack the pregnancy (not sure if I'm explaining it well), so the prednisolone is suppressing the immune system to stop it from attacking the pregnancy

@DancinOnTheCeiling - we haven't yet no. We have DS1 so have not gone down the route for NK testing as have already had a successful pregnancy 3 1/2 years ago. I think it is something we are going to consider now.

Did you do IVF if you don't mind me asking or conceive naturally? I'm trying to understand as have read heparin injections work best from ovulation to support implantation. I found out at 9dpo and began blood thinners from 13dpo so have a feeling the injections made no difference in my case.

Hi @Skyr1 sorry I completely missed your message a while back. We didn't do IVF, all natural. The issues for me doesn't seem to be conceiving but for the pregnancy to stick. How are you getting on?

DancinOnTheCeiling · 05/10/2024 06:59

Ps forgot to say we also have a DC1 (5). Have been trying for DC2 for 3 years now.. re IVF, I'm under the care of a private fertility consultant - he diagnosed high natural killer cells. Despite being on his protocol I've had a couple more losses so he thinks those losses were likely due to chromosomal abnormalities. I asked him if there is a point in IVF in our case and he said since we conceive easily he doesn't think there is, unless we have genetic testing as part of the iVF

Hi I have just been diagnosed with this after two consecutive miscarriages. My bloods were off the charts when it came to AS
normal range is between 0-9 and mine was 87!

i don’t think you started the meds too late. I was told that when I find out I’m pregnant to go in asap and get the heparin and aspirin so if it was a case of having to start earlier they would I’m sure put you on them before you conceive ….just a guess.
im a bit confused as to why the ivf clinic would be pushing for you to go down that route? Maybe im being cynical.

Skyr1 · 09/10/2024 19:07

@DancinOnTheCeiling that's seems to be like us. We seem to be able to get pregnant but not being able to stick. Where did you get testing done for NK cells?
Currently, dare I say, pregnant again. Very early 14dpo but after so many losses already preparing the worst. Pregnancy after loss robs so much from you.
How are you getting on?

@Clockoff we are not sure either why we are being pushed down IVF route as we have no problem conceiving (although my losses have caused extremely irregular cycles)
How are you doing with your diagnosis.

@Skyr1 we were tested at the Lister in London (under Prof Thum). It was very expensive - although compared to some other clinics I think the Lister is 'cheap'. Our consultant is happy for us to have everything we need done locally, we only came to London for the blood tests. (We live nowhere near London).

It's a few weeks ago since you posted, I want to say (tentative) congratulations on getting a BFP but I also know how hard it is to be positive about a BFP after many losses. Are you still pregnant/how are you getting on?

We're on a break from TCC just now, I need a bit of time to recover as my last loss was very recent, haven't even had my period yet. I'm focusing on health and weight atm, plus researching if there is anything else we can do...

@DancinOnTheCeiling I hope you are ok? We have a first appointment with Dr Thum this week. How did you get on. X

Hi, I am going through something very similar. Appreciate this is an old post. Would you be able to update us and were you successful after taking the medication?
