Looking for advice... anyone ever had a D&C?

Hi guys,

Firstly, so sorry to everyone who has experienced loss.

Currently going through a missed miscarriage and it looks like I'll need a D&C.

Could anyone who has had one let me know what to expect? I am meant to be going abroad next week but I'm not sure what the recovery is like or if I'll be able to go? It's likely the D&C will be on Monday.

If anyone could let me know what to expect and how your recovery went I'd be so grateful.

Thanks 😊

Firstly I am so very sorry for your loss x
I had a missed miscarriage and waited three weeks for things to happen naturally. They didn't so I then had a D&C and wished I'd done that right from the start.
I was in and out on the same day, I had a GA so didn't know anything about what was going on.
Whilst I was very very sad after, physically I was fine after a couple of days xxx

Sending you lots of love xx

I am sorry for your loss.
I had a mmc at 12 weeks and as the NHS hospital sent me home with a leaflet I contacted the closest Private hospital who booked me in that same afternoon
Of course I got excellent care but I expect the procedure is the same everywhere. I spent the night in the hospital and went home next day, although I am not sure if that would be case in NHS.
I wasn't really in pain but was wiped out from the general and slept a lot for a couple of days.
best of luck

Sorry for your loss.

I had a D&C for a MMC on a Friday the day before DS's first birthday party. I had a GA but was out the same day. I don't remember any pain although was a bit tired.
Party was fine and I went back to work, commuting into London on the Monday.
I was physically fine but mentally a bit more battered although pleased to get everything over with as it was an early MMC so I had to have 2 scans a week apart before procedure to confirm definitely a MC.

I'm also very sorry for what you are going through.

I had a mmc at 15 weeks. It didn't go to plan because they started me off in the morning with a pessary, but then the theatre had an emergency case so I had to deal with it myself with no pain relief, which wasn't pleasant.

I ended up having the d&c at about 5. It was fine and I was very relieved it was over. I ended up staying overniggt as it was late - which I was actually quite glad of.

If it happend again I would take a hot water bottle and anything that makes you more comfortable such as a pillow. Recovery was fine, but my head was a bit messed up for a short while after. I hope it all goes quickly and smoothly for you.

So sorry you're going through this OP. My d&c was an absolute breeze physically. Obviously it was hard emotionally. But when I woke up I had no pain - only slight cramps. And as pp have said you feel a bit out of it from the GA. But overall it's totally fine, and I'm a huge wimp about these things.

CosmicLove · 24/07/2024 21:25

@Bb542 I'm so sorry you're going through this. Its absolutely awful. I had MMC in April and started bleeding whilst waiting for rescan. My bleeding became so heavy that I had to have emergency surgical evacuation under GA. The surgery itself was fine physically - I went into hospital in the early hours of the morning, had the procedure around 7am and was home by about 3pm. I think I needed paracetamol for a few days and I bled for 3 weeks, although it was light by the end and I've read many other women bleed for less time. It was obviously an ordeal but I think the emergency aspect and blood loss made the whole thing much more traumatic. Hopefully a scheduled surgery would be more straightforward physically. The emotional toll obviously can't be ignored so make sure you give yourself time to grieve. Everyone's circumstances are slightly different but it's a living nightmare for anyone who has been through a loss. Sending love ❤️

It's a long time ago but I don't remember feeling particularly fragile physically. Emotionally I was though. I'm sorry for your loss, OP.

I'm so sorry for your loss.
I had a d&c with GA and had no significant pain or discomfort afterwards and felt fine physically by the next day. I hope the procedure is equally fine for you and you get that time away.

Hi! I’ve had a couple now and they were a breeze compared to having to pass on its own accord. I went in first thing in the morning and was out before lunch. No pain, minimal bleeding. I felt physically fine before I left the hospital. I would definitely choose that option again.

Whereland · 24/07/2024 21:50

I had one without GA just a spinal block and was home the same day. Physically felt fine just a bit crampy and tender

Bb542 · 25/07/2024 05:22

Thanks so much for your replies. I definitely feel a bit more at ease now. It sounds like it'll be tougher emotionally. I found out there were issues with this pregnancy nearly a month ago so I just want it all over now 😫

I'm so sorry for your loss. I've had 3 MMCs, and had surgical management for all 3 under general anaesthetic. Had minimal bleeding after, lasting about a week. Cramps for about 48hrs after but not bad ones at all. I found it a lot easier to separate the physical and emotional recovery. Sending you hugs, I fully understand the feeling of wanting it all over with now xx

Bb542 · 29/07/2024 18:11

Had the d&c today. I hope there aren't too many people reading this in the future but for anyone who is unsure what option to choose, I would definitely go with the d&c. It was so quick and I feel like I've finally got closure. Absolutely 0 pain after and minimal bleeding so far.

I'm glad you're feeling okay physically and that it was the right choice for you under the circumstances. Pregnancy loss is such a hard thing to go through so do take care of yourself and go gently ❤️ xx

Hello @Bb542 I’m sorry for your loss and I’m glad that the procedure went ok for you. I’m expecting to have a D&C soon, probably Friday. Could I please ask how long did you have to stay in the hospital after the procedure for recovery? I’ve never had GA before so don’t know how long it takes to wear off. They mentioned I might have to stay over night but I really don’t want to have to do that!
Many thanks

Hi @Natpat81 I'm so sorry you're going through this as well. It's very difficult. My experience was as an emergency due to extreme bleeding so others may be different. But I was taken to theatre around 7am and I was discharged and able to go home that afternoon around 3.30pm I think. That was after a straightforward GA so I suppose it would depend on how well you recovered from the anaesthetic. Wishing you all the best xx

I’m so sorry for your loss, I’m glad to hear the procedure went well. I had one a few year ago for a molar pregnancy, I lost more blood than expected during the op but recovered well, was discharged the same day and after a few days of light duties, I was back to myself. Minimal bleeding and pain, it was the heartbreak and emotional side of things that took longer to come to terms with. Please be kind to yourself, take care

Hi @Natpat81, so sorry I'm only replying now and I'm really sorry you need a d&c. Sending you lots of love ❤️
I was admitted at 7am and left hospital around 1pm. They gave me the General Anaesthetic at around 8:45am and I woke up in recovery just before 10am. I felt quite groggy after but it wore off after about an hour and I felt fine then. I was able to walk around, use the bathroom, eat etc.
I am still bleeding but it's quite a light flow. I think it's normal.
Hope you're ok ❤️
