Surgical Management under GA - my experience

Apologies in advance if this is a long post, but I trawled the internet looking for advice and experiences before deciding what I wanted to do and thought I would give my experience in the hopes it may help at least one person!

My journey of miscarriage was a long one, we had an early scan where they found an empty gestational sac, it took a further 4 scans and up to my 10 weeks for them to call it as a double blighted ovum (they found another sac), worst 10 weeks of my life yet!

I was originally set on medical management, I was terrified of the thought of going under GA, but I couldn’t bare to wait any longer and go through physically passing the sacs at home.

The day of the surgery I was taken into the ward and met the doctor performing the surgery, the anaesthetist and some nurses looking after me. They took bloods and gave me the paperwork to fill out and gave me my time for going down. They came to collect me and wheeled me down to the theatre where i feel it could get overwhelming for some people. There were a lot of people and there was a lot going on, wires being stuck to me and lots of questions but they did very well to keep me calm and have some normal conversation with some jokes! They administered the anti sickness meds and pain killers first which I must admit made me feel great, at least 5 gin and tonics deep 😂 then he told me to take deep breaths and keep my eyes wide open but within 3 seconds of him saying that I don’t remember anything! The next thing I knew I was being woken by the nurse in recovery about an hour later! I felt completely fine after, I had no pain and very minimal bleeding. It was a very good reset for the body and I felt super rested after 😂

I was expecting a lot of bleeding but it was just like a light period. I had to stay for 4 hours in the hospital with a drip of fluids just to replenish after not eating/drinking before hand, but they gave me some food and water and observed my vitals until I could leave.

I am 2 days post surgery now and the bleeding is pretty much done, it’s like the end of a period and there is only blood when I wipe. I’ve also had no pain at all.

overall it’s been as positive of an experience as it could be considering the circumstances and I would whole heartedly suggest this option to anyone who just wants to get things sorted quickly

Sorry you had to go through this as well! I didn’t experience bloating, but I know that can be very normal

I had done bleeding around 4 days after the procedure for 3 days like a normal period but that’s about it

Thank you for this, I'm having to make a decision about what I do and this really helped

I’m sorry that you’re in a position that you need to make this decision!

I would choose this option again if I had too. I got my negative test 2 1/2 weeks following the surgery and my cycle has been normal length, so recovery has been great
