Trying again after miscarriage

Hi, I’m early 30s and I have recently had a second missed miscarriage, baby stopped growing at 8 weeks. I hadn’t started bleeding and had an MVA (manual vacuum aspiration) procedure a week later.

It’s been just over two weeks since the MVA procedure and I feel ready to try again, emotionally and physically (not bleeding anymore). I wondered if anybody tried again straight away and conceived before having a period? Or am I best to wait until I’ve had a period.

It took 3 months to conceive and had my first missed miscarriage (I had a natural miscarriage) and then 6 months after I conceived again and had second missed miscarriage (I had an MVA procedure this time).

If anyone can relate or has gone or going through similar please share your stories, and if you had tests done or if you did anything different with a successful pregnancy after miscarriage, also if you did have tests done, how long was the wait for them x thank you to anyone that can help x

Hi @Anb93 i don’t have any advice, but wanted to let you know you aren’t alone. I too have had 2 MMC. I’m so sorry you have experienced this as well.
First was in November which took about 3 months to conceive. And my second MC was end April which also took about 3 months to conceive. My second one is partial molar though so I can’t conceive for a while yet.

Following the first I had 1 period and then got pregnant. It was a long cycle though due to the MC causing my body to go out of whack I think.

Only thing I’m doing differently this time is taking more supplements to make me feel like I’m being proactive. Taking folic acid, coq10, high strength vitamin D and omega 3.

Not had any tests yet but have an appointment in November at a miscarriage clinic

Sorry for your loss. We waited a couple of months to try again, after a MC at 11 weeks. I had some counselling during that time which was a massive help to me. It took 4 months for another pregnancy (about same as first one), and I’m 26 weeks now. It is advised to wait and have a period first, and my experience was that the time was beneficial for us. I cut back on alcohol after the MC, still had odd one but I was drinking quite a bit before first pregnancy-didn’t change anything else. I’m also early 30s.

We tried again instantly but didn’t get pregnant. I had my period last week so trying again. Everything I’ve researched said there’s no medical reason why you can’t try again. However. My period was so heavy (I was sixteen weeks and had to give birth) so I felt glad my period cuz it felt like I was dispelling extra and cleaning out.

Sorry to hear this. I had MMC at 14 weeks and D&C. Waited 3 months before trying again but that was because it was IVF.

I would say try again when you want to as long as you feel emotionally and physically ready.

There’s no reason why you can’t wait, but midwives like it if you wait until after your next period for dating purposes.

I’ve had 3 mc’s and currently trying again.
im on month 2 of trying after my last mc.
good luck and I’m sending you loads of baby dust! X

@Anb93 sorry you've had to go through this. I'm in a very similar situation, had an MVA a week ago as no heartbeat at 8 weeks. Absolutely devastating. I also had a loss last year at 6 weeks but didn't have any symptoms until 9 weeks. Passed most of it naturally but had retained tissue which I had an MVA for. It's such a torturous thing to go through.

Took us 6 cycles to conceive last time round and we will be trying again straight away. No idea when I'll ovulate though (last time was CD12 after MVA but I think that was because it was already a few weeks after the natural miscarriage. I'm 32 and feel like time is slipping away but everyone tells us we have plenty of time.

Thank you all for taking the time to respond to my post, I’m so sorry to hear about your losses also. It’s so sad.
I feel like time is slipping away too.
I decided to start trying straight away and hope for the best. I have no idea how long it will take to get an appointment and have the tests done to check for anything that may be causing miscarriages. I’m in the UK and not sure how long it will take on the nhs. I’m scared if I become pregnant again I may miscarry again, but I know I have to keep trying because there is still I chance I might not.
I’m sending lots of baby dust to you all too. X

I’m so sorry you’re going through this, it’s absolutely devastating. I’ve just been diagnosed with MMC (still waiting for management) so also keen to hear others experiences.

I don’t know if it different with MMC because of the intervention, but I had a spontaneous miscarriage in 2022 and conceived my daughter after that with no period in between. The reason I’d wonder if it was different is because I think in theory with a d&c you lose more of your lining so could make it harder to stick? But I’d have thought (/hope) to be able to at least try?

Wishing you all the best x

@Hrf1503 sorry for your loss. For my first I miscarried naturally in between scans but had retained tissue that I had an MVA for. My periods were super light after (2-3 days barely filling a pad) so I was worried, but conceived 6 cycles later which ended in another MMC. I also had a scan before I concieved and my lining was on the thinner side but not abnormal. I had an MVA two weeks ago for the second MMC so waiting for ovulation too return. That's just my experience but I know people on here who have conceived within a few months or less after surgery.

Hello @Anb93sorry to hear about your losses. I am in a similar position and wondered how things turned out for you if you don't mind sharing? Did you have any further testing? I'm currently looking at private options as don't think I'll get an NHS referral. However it seems with the number of tests they could do it gets pretty expensive

Hey, thank you, I’m also sorry to hear you’re going through this too. I had an appointment at Tommy’s miscarriage clinic and had some blood tests done. Results came back all fine and they said to ring them when I become pregnant again and they will see me for scans. They prescribed me progesterone pessaries and to start them soon as I get a positive pregnancy test. It took 9 months to conceive and I started using progesterone straight away. Tommy’s saw me for a scan at 7 weeks and again at 10 weeks. I am now currently 16 weeks and weaning off progesterone. I have a scan this week to check my cervix and if all looks fine I can come off progesterone completely.
I’m not sure what caused my two previous losses, I have been very anxious but hopeful with this one. Tommy’s have been a great support, if you can reach out to them and see if they can help with any tests. I know a friend of mine who had 5 consecutive losses and she took part in a trial with Tommy’s and they really helped and supported her and she now has a healthy 6 month baby. Sending you lots of hope and baby dust. X

Thanks so much for getting back to me and congratulations on your pregnancy. Wishing you all the best! I'm trying to get an appointment with my GP and will see if they can refer me to Tommy's.
