Passed something huge 10 weeks after D and C

Hi, sorry for the graphic image. Unfortunately we had a missed miscarraige at the beginning of March and I had a D and C 5th of March. I was 11 weeks but baby had passed at 9 weeks 😢 I had an ultrasound a few days later as I had suspected appendicitis I was in that much pain. But they said there was no retained tissue. Fast forward to today, 3 days into my 2nd period post D and C. It's been really heavy and very painful but I just figured things will be a bit off for a few months after miscarraige. Until I felt the urge to push and just been to the toilet and passed this 🙈 I'm traumatised. Has anyone ever experienced anything like this 10 weeks or so after D and C? It wasn't soft it was solid. Sorry again for the graphic image and apologies if this triggers anyone. Also I should add I definitely was not pregnant again.

I'm so sorry you've been through all this. I suggest you call 111 or the early pregnancy unit and try to get seen if you can. I hope you get some support.

Sunnydaysaregone · 19/05/2024 19:16

So sorry to read what you’ve been through. I wonder if that might be a surgical swab that’s inadvertently been left high in your vagina and your body has now expelled it. I’d drop it into a bag and seek medical advice. They’ll confirm what you’ve passed. Hope you feel better soon.

Mummy2024 · 19/05/2024 19:18

How do you know you definitely were not pregnant again?

Guardiansoulmates · 19/05/2024 19:19

How awful for you. I would seek medical attention for this first thing tomorrow.

whatamess100 · 19/05/2024 19:22

God thats awful, I've no idea what that could be but I'd deffinently ring early pregnancy unit tomorrow. Keep it and show them.

Smartstuffed · 19/05/2024 19:23

To my mind it looks like it might be a fibroid (based on a similar sounding experience that I had many years ago).

KittytheHare · 19/05/2024 19:24

I had something similar happen to me about 10 years ago. Missed miscarriage , d&c and then had v heavy periods passing lots of tissue (not as big as yours). It turn out I’d had a partial molar pregnancy, where basically cells run amok and emulate a foetus. You need to have this seen to and your hcg levels tested. Go back to your gynae unit. It may not be this at all of course.

Wishing you better fortunes for the future x

FannyFifer · 19/05/2024 19:26

I had a patient who passed a fibroid which looked pretty much identical to that. I would get medical advice asap.

Tel12 · 19/05/2024 19:28

Phone 111 they should be able to advise you further.

Incredibly unlikely to be a surgical swab - theatre packs come with a set number of swabs, and they’re counted in as they’re used by the surgeon, and then counted back out by the person assisting. A written tally of swabs in/out is usually written on a board in the theatre, and all must be present before ending the procedure.

Patients who had been stitched closed have had to be opened back up in the past to locate missing swabs.

Theatre swabs also have a string of radioopaque thread woven through them, so that if there’s ever a situation where there’s a missing swab an X-ray can be done to check if the swab is still inside the patient.

OP; I think this is possibly a deciduous cast. If it was retained products of conception you would most likely still have been testing positive on a urine hCG.

Sophamy · 19/05/2024 19:31

Thanks everyone. I didn't keep it, just took some photos and flushed it. I didn't think, was in shock 🙈 I know I wasn't pregnant again as I've been tracking my ovulation and just with circumstances and me being ill I know we haven't dtd at the right time. I'm sort of glad I wasn't now though can't imagine the panic if I was and I passed that 🙈 will contact my GP first thing in the morning but was just curious if anyone has any idea.

Thanks for your reply. I haven't actually checked in a while but I was still testing positive up to 6 weeks afterwards, I didn't check after that as my period had started.

I've actually just had a quick look on Google and I think that's a possibility. I'm just baffled that they never seen it though. I had an ultrasound at 11 weeks that found the missed miscarraige and the radiologist actually said, I don't see any fibroids or any indication of an obvious problem. Had another ultrasound at the EPU to confirm, an ultrasound on the Gynae ward during my A and E visit to check for retained tissue and then another one to check my appendix a few days later, though I'm nearly sure they scanned my womb and ovaries during that one too. It baffles me how something that big could've been missed so many times. 🙈

I passed the exact same thing after a termination 3 months after having my first baby (sorry i know this is going to seem insensitive, i had a coil which failed me and had severe PND after my 1st and wanted to try explain properly) but i was the same gestation as you when i had it... it was 6 years ago so can't remember exactly what it was but I genuinly felt like I was in labour again, except I was bleeding very heavily, getting contraction type pains and like you, urge to push and passed a hard blob of weirdness, this was 2-3 weeks after the termination...Dr said it was left over tissue or something or other. I was due to have the coil surgically removed from my bowel which perforated my womb, and a d&c during the surgery. But when they went in there was nothing left over... my memory is hazy as it was abit of a while ago so it's likely to be left over tissues as it looks and sounds exactly like what I passed, it was terrifying 🫠

Confusion98 · 19/05/2024 19:58

Meant to say 2-3 months later not weeks! Sorry I'm absolutely shattered with this heat 😄

Lemonvalley · 21/05/2024 15:04

I’m sorry for what you’ve been through.
just wanted to say that yes I passed something extremely similar, but in my case it was attached to a cord and then a sac with baby inside. In my case, it was obviously a shrivelled up or malformed placenta, which I could only tell because of the way it was attached to the sac which held the baby. Mine was passed at 11 weeks gestation, so similar gestation to yours. I’m not sure but it could be possible that they removed the baby/sac but left the placenta or some other related tissue behind. This can happen. I have found that the medicos are very ignorant of what embryos/foetuses look like at this early stage of gestation, and basically have no clue. Very hard to find pictures even on the internet. I think you might benefit from seeing a gynaecologist/obstetrician for some potential further explanation. I would also request an ultrasound via your GP to check for retained products of conception. You have a right to demand a referral for these things. Good luck. If you otherwise feel ok and have no temperature and there’s no odour then there’s no obvious sign of any infection, which is good. It took about six months before my periods became less painful. Take care of yourself. It’s a really crap thing to go through x for

Sorry to hear you've been through similar, it really is awful and not talked about enough ❤️ I managed to get an appointment with my GP yesterday, she got in in touch with a gynae registrar at the hospital who double checked my scans (after D and C) in March and said she was confident there was no retained tissue. They've suggested possible inflammation and that I've passed some endometriosis? Not even sure if that makes sense. But they've put me on two different antibiotics as a precaution and told me to wait until after my next cycle before ttc again. I guess I'll never really know what it was but just hope this is the end of an awful few months.

I literally could have written this post! This has just happened to me too. Such a shock. Had a missed miscarriage about 3 months ago at 11 weeks. Bub stopped growing at 8.5wks. Tried medical management and ended up with a D&C. I have just passed something that looks so similar to your photo. Only a few days after my second period which was so painful! Did you ever find anything further out? Hope you have a had some luck conceiving since then.

Hi @Easybreezyk, firstly I am so sorry for your loss, be kind to yourself ❤️

Honestly, I never got any answers about what this was but I'm convinced it was retained tissue as there's no other explanation for what it was. I'll never know.

I am currently now 19 weeks pregnant with my rainbow so there can definitely be light at the end of the tunnel. Although very bittersweet as will never forget the one we lost ❤️ I hope you have luck concieveing again when you are ready❤️ xo
