Partial molar pregnancy

Hi everyone. I had a missed miscarriage in January, which I found out about at a scan at 13 weeks. I had surgical management and they sent everything off for testing, and I just found out today it was a partial molar pregnancy 😢

I just had a couple of questions for anyone who has been through this…

  1. When were you able to start trying again? I’ve read it’s normally 6 months, but would this be 6 months from the surgery or 6 months from hCG levels being at zero? It’s already been 3 months since the surgery so I’m wondering if my hCG levels are normal if I could start trying then or in 3 months or when 🙈 Obviously they’ll tell me this once I get the results, but I’m just keen to get an idea of this now as I’m nearly 40 so really want to try as soon as possible!! Time is obviously not on my side.
  1. Has anyone gone on to need chemotherapy after having a negative home pregnancy test and period? They said there’s a small chance of it turning cancerous, but I’ve had a negative test at home and 2 periods since the surgery so I’m wondering if that means there is little risk of this or not?

I know everyone is different but would really love to hear people’s experiences if possible to get an idea of things x

Hi there. I'm sorry you are going through this, it's awful. I had a complete molar in May 2022. It took awhile for my HCG to come down, but it did by mid-August, and I was pregnant again in December. I didn't need chemotherapy and got my period back in six weeks. They say to wait for six months from your normal result but as you say if it's been three months that does change things. They urge caution in case any molar tissue grows back - as I said though I got pregnant again quite quickly, more quickly than advised as I was still under observation from Charing Cross. But it was all fine and my son is now 8 months old.

I started a thread about molars here which you might find useful: www.mumsnet.com/talk/miscarriage/4651461-molar-pregnancy-story-for-others. As you see most people do not need chemo, especially those with a partial molar. And really good to hear about the negative test and your periods - that's a really good sign that you are more than likely back to normal.

Sorry you are going through this, sending a hug x
