Can they refuse surgical management?

I have just been for a 7 week scan and the scan showed just a very early pregnancy sac, no fetal pole, no heartbeat.

I have to go back in a week to confirm but it’s quite clear that this pregnancy is not going to continue.

My previous experiences of miscarriage were at a different hospital and during Covid, where they refused to offer surgical management. I had really bad experiences of medical management, still having significant bleeding and positive tests weeks and weeks later.

Does anyone know if hospitals can refuse to offer surgical management?

I’m so sorry you’re going through this.

Different rules applied during COVID, so don’t feel afraid to advocate for what you need now. You know your body best, and it may be that another EPU nearby may be able to assist with surgical management if yours can’t.

All the best 💐

I'm sorry to hear this. No they shouldn't refuse. Just say that's what you want and push back if you get resistance. I had no issues with mine.

No I wouldn't have thought so but it won't be the quickest option to get started with as you'll need to get booked in for surgery. From memory I had to wait about 5 days from deciding to go this route.

Hello @Tralalalaaa123 so sorry to hear about your MMC. I have just found out I’ve had to MMC too, at 10 weeks (baby stopped growing at 8) but this was on a private scan. I’m going to the EPAU on Thursday I’m hoping that they will just allow me to have a surgical procedure because my previous natural MC at home have traumatised me. I asked on the phone and they said that the woman has complete control over how they’d like their MC to proceed and she’s assured me I can ask for the surgery. I am yet to have this appointment but I don’t know if this helps x

I'm so sorry OP. It's such a sad thing to happen.
I'm sure they'll let you have surgical management.

If they don’t, maybe contact BPAS. They don’t just do terminations - a friend had a surgical management of a MMC with them, but it did involve travelling to a centre

Thanks all, that is reassuring. I’ve started bleeding now but not much so not sure if that’ll affect whether it’s appropriate.

Really hope the wait isn’t too long for surgery. I’m a teacher so am off this week, but I don’t think I’d be able to work if it’s not resolved - I can’t just leave the classroom if bleeding suddenly became really heavy.
