To aspirin or not to aspirin?

Hello,

I've had two miscarriages - chemical pregnancy in May 2023 and miscarriage at 7 weeks in November 2023. Now three months on I think I may be pregnant with an extremely faint line (around 10DPO).

I am wondering whether I should try aspirin this time if I turn out to be pregnant? I did try it for a few weeks during the 2WW the first month after my miscarriage and I did not fall pregnant despite timing sex perfectly so I've not tried again. But now I don't know?

I had an early scan before my miscarriage and the gestational sac looked the wrong shape and the foetus was very small. So I feel like my miscarriages are probably both attributed to genetic issues with the embryo maybe.

What do you think aspirin might do?

nearly8 · 18/02/2024 20:13

@User134389 I've read on other threads that it can be useful but I think the ladies were saying not to do it straight away. I think it was on a thread called Dr shehata advice. There's loads of drug protocol advice on there.

Sorry for your losses Hun it's really shitty. I've just had my third in under 12 months so totally feel your pain and anxiety. Be kind to yourself, I hope this will be your rainbow 🌈

@PoppingTomorrow prevent a further miscarriage, helping blood flow to baby/placenta

Have you spoken to your GP about progesterone?

@PoppingTomorrow prevent a further miscarriage, helping blood flow to baby/placenta

But this will only prevent another miscarriage if lack of blood flow is the issue. If it isn't, it won't help at all. I know it's rubbish but best to act on medical advice.

I’m sorry about your previous losses .
I am on aspirin for my pregnancy and took it during my first pregnancy too. Personally I would speak to a gp / midwife first before taking it.

Have you spoken to your GP about progesterone?

I did a day 21 test during my last pregnancy (didn't realise I was pregnant at the time) and my result was about 41 so I am not sure progesterone is a problem, I guess it's probably just genetic issues meaning the embryos have been non-viable

I was told it would be the first line the recurrent miscarriage clinic would try. I took 75mg once I got my positive with ds - he stopped growing at 32 weeks but is now a healthy almost 6 year old. Consultant wrote letter stating that I should take 150mg aspirin in any future pregnancies which I did with dd
It's worth talking to your dr about it.

See extract from report below...

Low-dose aspirin may improve pregnancy chances for women with one or two prior miscarriagesWhatContrary to previous findings, low-dose aspirin therapy before conception and during early pregnancy may increase pregnancy chances and live births among women who have experienced one or two prior miscarriages, suggests a study by researchers at the National Institutes of Health. Rather than looking solely at the difference in pregnancy rates between women who were given aspirin and those receiving a placebo, the study also accounted for differences in total aspirin use between women who deviated from the daily regimen and those who adhered to it.
The research team was led by Enrique Schisterman, Ph.D., of the Epidemiology Branch at NIH’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and colleagues. It appears in the Annals of Internal Medicine.
Published in 2014, the Effects of Aspirin in Gestation and Reproduction (EAGeR) trial included more than 1,000 women between 18 and 40 years old with one or two previous miscarriages. The women received either daily low-dose aspirin (81 milligrams) or a placebo while trying to conceive. If they did conceive, they would continue to receive this regimen through the 36th week of pregnancy. Although the study found no overall difference in pregnancy loss rates between the two groups, there was a higher birthrate for the subgroup of women who had experienced only one previous miscarriage before the 20th week of pregnancy.
Unlike the original analysis, the current reanalysis considered whether a participant adhered to the treatment or skipped days or discontinued it entirely for side effects such as bleeding, nausea or vomiting. Compared to the placebo group, for every 100 women, adhering to the aspirin regimen for five to seven days a week led to eight more positive pregnancy tests, six fewer pregnancy losses, and culminated in 15 more live births. Women who adhered to the therapy four days per week experienced similar results. The researchers concluded that taking low-dose aspirin at least four days per week could improve the odds for pregnancy and live birth in this group of women.

Aspirin does not prevent pregnancy loss, NIH study finds

A daily low dose of aspirin does not appear to prevent subsequent pregnancy loss among women with a history of one or two prior pregnancy losses, according to researchers at the National Institutes of Health.

There are a lot of opinions, views on it.

YouAndMeAndThem · 18/02/2024 21:45

I took aspirin as I was high risk for preeclampsia. I think it's recommended only after 8 weeks pregnant.

Nor for me but NICE guidelines recommend for 2 prev MCs where cause unknown.

I don't know if it's what made the difference for me in my 3rd pregnancy but I had a healthy baby

I'm on day 3 of brown when wiping 😔 so not sure how long I'll be holding onto this one once again... have messaged my GP surgery

@User134389 Sorry to hear that Hun. Isn't always bad news though. Why don't you go to EPU? They should be able to give you an answer quicker. Keeping my fingers crossed 🤞 for you xx

Hi @User134389 i just came across your thread and wondered if the aspirin has worked for you so far? I’m in a similar position, 1 chemical at 5 weeks and a MMC at 7/8 weeks but only found out at 12. I am thinking about aspirin next time but have read lots of differing views. I just wanted to know how you got on with it? Sending love and hope all has gone well xx

User06489 · 28/05/2024 16:07

Hi @Sunshine8011 I lost the pregnancy in February, got pregnant again in April and took 150mg from positive test 10DPO and lost that - chemical pregnancy - around 17DPO.

Sunshine8011 · 28/05/2024 16:12

I’m so so sorry for your losses @User134389 it’s the hardest thing I’ve been through and it’s so awful so many women have to experience this pain. Have you been sent for in depth testing? I pray you get your rainbow soon xx

User06489 · 28/05/2024 16:15

Hi @Sunshine8011 thank you, I know it's terrible! I am on a waiting list but no idea when I will be seen, it's already been 3 months. I think I will go private by September as my cut off. I will keep trying and will try aspirin again, the latest chemical never really got off the ground and I only had very pale lines so maybe it was never going to grow.
