How much bleeding is too much in a miscarriage?

So i found out i miscarried yesterday. I started light potting on sunday. Went to A&e on monday, they couldn't see no heartbeat at 10 weeks after having seen healthy heartbeat at 6 weeks. Midwife said i could have likely miscarried 2 weeks ago.
I have opted to go for surgical management on Wednesday but i have started bleeding quite heavily. I've changed 3 pads within the span of 20 mins. Clots are literally shooting out of me with so much force like you shoot a dart gun. I am just wondering, is that normal??

That sounds very heavy, and I'd suggest going back to A&E to get checked out. I had a miscarriage at a similar stage several years ago (like you, it was a missed miscarriage, not picked up for several weeks), and I was told if I was soaking through more than one pad an hour to go in and get checked. From my experience, the bleeding was pretty heavy (quite a lot heavier than a regular period), but what you're describing sounds much worse than that.

Sorry you're going through this 💐

Sorry for your loss OP. I had a miscarriage in November and one a few years ago and this sounds totally normal to me. I found during the time I was 'contracting' I was bleeding really heavily but it got a bit lighter when the contractions stopped for a while.

So sorry for your loss. Definitely go to A&E x

Based on previous experience you need to seek medical advice. At least phone 111.

Sorry for your loss. When I miscarried a couple of years ago I was losing loads of blood for hours, flooding through pads and clothing within an hour, huge clots. I went to A&E and they found some tissue was "stuck", which was causing heavy bleeding as my body tried to expel it. They removed it and bleeding slowed down to period like levels.

Thank you for all the advice.i have taken 2 ibuprofen and 2 paracetamols so painwise i am ok now. But i feel like bleeding comes in bursts. For instance i will have 10 min break and then it will just spray out of me where it has soaked my full pad in 3 seconds my undewear. I rush to toilet and then clots just shoot out of me. Iam on my 3rd pad now and going through a pause again, if it happens again now like i will call 111.

Just wondering if i keep bleeding like this, would EPU still go ahead with surgical management?

Hi OP,
It does sound similar to my experience where I was having ‘contractions’ and every 10 minutes would have more blood/clots and then it would ease off.
I would always recommended calling 111 or your EPU if you are concerned though - 111 sent an ambulance out to me who confirmed it was a natural miscarriage and advised things to look out for E.g high temp, smelly discharge etc
In my experience they will still at least scan you to see if all of baby has come out or if they still need to go ahead and operate.
So sorry you are going through this, sending all the best wishes in the world x

Thank you. So i went up to changing 4 pads in a hour and then bleeding has kind of stopped. Just when i pee abd wipe there is some but the spitting out of clots has stopped. I called EPU to ask of they'd still go ahead with the surgical management tomorrow. Haven't heard back yet.

Is miscarriage bleeding meant to be random like this or continuous?

mc bleeding varies enormously.
On the one hand, what you describe is within nirmal range, but on the other hand that is a lot of blood, and don't wait too long to get medical advice /help in case there is a problem.

I am so sorry for your los x x

steppemum · 30/01/2024 13:01

and i would definitely go to EPU tomorrow, they can check that it is complete and make sure all is ok.

Plumbibii · 30/01/2024 14:24

EPU got back to me. They said they will do scan tomo first before the surgical to see where we stand. Hopefully everything's ok and won't need surgery🤞

Just an update. Scan showed i have passed the most of the pregnancy naturally so that hour where i was passing clots like dart gun was me passing the pregnancy. I am glad i don't have to have the surgery anymore and nature has done it's job itself.
