MVA

I’m booked to have an MVA. I’m 10+4 but foetus had stopped growing at 7 weeks. I had no idea until I went for a scan last week. I was going to try to wait for it to happen naturally but I’m finding that so hard and stressful so booked in for an MVA.

Any stories about MVAs? How painful is it? Anything you wish you had known or taken? X

@Igglepiggleandhisboat so sorry for your loss. I had an MVA but it was only for retained tissue as I passed most of the miscarriage naturally. I chose this option as I just wanted to draw a line under it all and move on.

I found the procure very bearable - I was expecting it to be worse than it was. All of the staff were brilliant and were talking to me throughout so that I was distracted. You can hear some 'sucking' noises as everything is removed. I had a few cramps here and there but nothing worse than period pains. Make sure you have a large pad to put on after or ask for one (I wasn't told about this as had to run to the loo after!)

I bled for 5 days after and had period pains and was quite tired but was all bearable. The worst part for me was the hormone 'crash' after it where I felt very emotional and the grief felt really raw. It has got easier with time though.

When is your MVA booked in for? It may well start naturally before you get to it. I miscarriaged naturally about 4 weeks after it stopped growing.

Happy to help with any questions and I hope it goes ok!

They have said I can have it this week. I’m tempted to try and wait for it to happen naturally but Im getting more and more Anxious as the wait goes on!

@Igglepiggleandhisboat have they said how long they will let you wait? Just try and do what feels right for you. If you want to wait and can do safely then see if that's an option. You may wait to pass it naturally but then need surgery anyway if you have retained tissue, although I think this is the minority of cases. It really is a horrible time, look after yourself.
