Incompetent cervix

Hi

I just had a second trimester loss. I've seen people at similar stages say they were diagnosed with this after the fact. I just wondered how diagnoses is given? I thought they could only monitor cervix length while you were pregnant. Thanks for any information. It's something I'm concerned about due to having previous lletz although i know it likely wasn't the reason.

Thanks

I'm really sorry for your loss. I had a loss at 19 weeks a few years ago.

They tend to base their diagnosis on history. If you have had Lletz in the past this can be a risk factor for it. I had no previous history but my waters went painlessly at 19 +3 and I delivered a few hours later. I was monitored in my next pregnancy but didn't need any intervention as they dismissed IC. Thankfully I had monitoring in my 3rd pregnancy as I required a cervical stitch and progesterone to get me to term.

But you are right that they will only measure during pregnancy as the cervix is so variable.

Thank you! I had lletz but had a small bleed on a scan. I then went through labour at 14 weeks i think it seems unlikely it was IC but i'm just trying to understand.

I'm so sorry for your loss x

They take a history from you and risk factors, I had a loss at 16 weeks in April and now I’m pregnant again I’ve been referred to premature birth clinic and they measure my cervix at 14, 16, 19 and 23 weeks. They usually start at 16 weeks but given that’s when I miscarried they stated my measurements early. Currently 22 weeks pregnant. My labour was definitely not painless with the baby girl we lost, due to the pain they think it was the placenta coming away rather than incompetent cervix.. sorry for your loss. It’s an awful thing to lose a baby, thoughts are with you 🤍

I'm so sorry for your loss and thanks for your feedback. I think because of the ongoing bleeding it probably isn't an IC. I didn't realise but i was also in labour for 24 hours so I feel like if there was any weakness this would have happened much sooner? I automatically blamed this because of lletz but it seems I might find another issue.
I don't know how to begin to get over this. I hope time makes it easier 😞
