Possible miscarriage due to not having Anti D injection

Hi. So I just recently had a miscarriage at 11 weeks. We saw a heartbeat at 8 weeks and all was well and then I started bleeding around 10 weeks and they said baby hadn’t grown much after our first scan and had no heartbeat.

I had a baby 2 years ago during lockdown and didn’t have the anti d injection after birth so I just assumed that baby has the same blood as me but I don’t remember the midwives even checking his blood after birth or letting me know that I didn’t need it. Maybe they forgot? Who knows but now I worry that’s why my body rejected this pregnancy.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation? I am now worried about future pregnancies!

Again it'll depend on your hospital but they might have recorded it on your discharge paperwork they gave you when you left the hospital. Mine has a section headed "puerperium" (i.e. postnatal) that includes "Anti-D: not required" because DS was Rh-neg. Might be worth a look at that paperwork to set your mind at rest?

Would that be in the red book?

Hey im rhesus - I don’t think its routine to give the injection till later in the pregnancy. My recollection is that they test the babies cord blood (i didnt notice them doing my kids) and if the baby is rhesus - like you are no need for the anti D after birth.

I gave birth last year and they told me they would only give me the anti D (other than the one at 28 weeks) if I had a bad fall or something that may have caused a bleed in my placenta (might be womb in general I can’t remember)

If you are worried speak to your midwife team they should be able to reassure you

I’m so sorry for your loss hope you have a good support network around you and are taking care of yourself ❤️

Thankyou for the reply. But do you actually remember the midwives saying “your baby is the same as you so you won’t need the injection (at birth) because that is what I am worried about. Did they check it and just not mention it to me as he had the same type as me or was it missed? How will I know? I can’t find anything in my red book. Could you request your notes from 2 years ago so you think?

The discharge paperwork is usually just one or two sheets of paper they print out when you're leaving the hospital. It's not routinely put in the red book. A copy of your discharge papers should have been emailed to your GP, so it might be worth asking them; otherwise, the hospital is required by law to keep labour and birth records for 25 years. They should have information on their website about how to request them.

Very sorry for your loss, OP.

I am rh neg and didn't have anti D in my first pregnancy. I had the fetal DNA blood test at 16w which came back as rh neg and noone mentioned to me anything after the cord blood test so I just assumed DD was also negative.

But in this pregnancy, my booking bloods results clearly state "no antibodies detected". Do you have access to your blood test results eg via an app if you don't have your notes anymore? If so, perhaps that might offer some reassurance, as if you did have the antibodies from previous pregnancies, presumably it would have shown up in your booking bloods.

Hi @UnicornRainbow2 very sorry for your loss. A couple of days after my surgery for my MMC in august I received a copy of my blood test results via an app which included an antibody screen test. I rang the EPU for confirmation that my test was negative so showing no anti bodies, which it was, so maybe give them a call? Like you I was looking for a reason for my mc and this seemed like a possible reason in my head but it wasn’t x

Thankyou to everyone who commented. I ended up getting my discharge notes from the hospital and my son had the same blood as me so no need for the anti d and that this miscarriage was just “one of those things”.

It gave me piece of mind anyway moving forward!
