Just a general post to tey to find out how closely connected ashermans syndrome is to d&c has anyone got ashermans after and how did you discover you had it is it visible on ultrasounds?

Very closely connected. The most common cause is a D&C. This website is very helpful and factual: https://www.ashermans.org/home/

I discovered I had it because after a D&C I was ovulating each month but not having periods. That is the main symptom. I had no pain. I went to see one of the top specialist consultants in the U.K. who sees this every day and he could see it on the ultrasound, as he is so skilled and knows what he is looking for but the only way to 100% confirm you have it is a hysteroscopy. Most sonographer / gynaes wouldn’t be able to confirm over ultrasound. Hope that helps

Just to note that most D&C in the U.K. are actually ERPCS which are done via MVA suction under ultrasound so the risk should be lower than 25% quoted on the Ashermans website.

Thanks for the information 25% still sounds high really for first time d&Cs info I have read indicate its more common in multiple d&c situations.

Yes - I think that % is too high. My consultant told me he thinks 5% of people who have an ERPC with MVA end up with it.

it’s definitely more likely with multiple D&Cs, but I got it from one MVA and my uterus was 60% scarred.

It's very scary as i have asked my ob if i may have ashermans and if we should check just due to much lighter flow on day 3 of my periods now he said there is no need a aspiration causes no rish of adhesions he said he would would want to check if cururette had been used.

Aspiration can definitely cause adhesions. it caused mine and multiple people’s on the Ashermans Facebook group which I can share a link to.

Where are you based? Obs probably aren’t as experienced in this as specialist gynaes (I saw Mr Adrian Lower who is one of the top in the U.K.).

Hi Hopefulhoney, I realise this is an older thread but wondered how you are getting on and if I might ask some questions? I've just had a hysteroscopy and laparoscopy to deal with adhesions but still been told I only have 60% capacity in my uterus afterwards. We would have very much liked to continue trying for number 2 but it's been a long old journey so far.

@brebrev what are your symptoms? How did you manage to get a hysteroscopy? I had surgical management in February and due to now having really bad cramps and lighter periods I'm wondering if I could potentially have scarring.

Hi jellyfish so sorry to read this.

After a repeat ERPC I went to the GP because my periods were different - much lighter, yet painful, kind of seemed like old blood rather than fresh (sorry if TMI). Felt like my abdomen was always swollen around the time of my period but then period really light. It just felt like it was wrong. GP did a load of blood tests which confirmed I was ovulating and then referred me to an NHS fertility clinic.

Hycosy scan found adhesions across my uterus and potentially one blocked tube.

Hysteroscopy was to deal with the adhesions but the follow up I've had has shown that although it has improved it's still not ideal. Still one blocked tube with scarring and trying to work out what to do next.

Wish I'd pushed quicker on the GP now really so I think if things don't seem right then I would.

@brebrev I'm sorry you're going through this, it must be stressful. When did you have the MC? How long has it taken since you saw your GP to get to this point?

brebrev · 05/06/2024 19:33

Same to you! It has been a long journey for us. Miscarriage was 2022 but it was my third so we firstly had a referral to the recurrent miscarriage clinic and other tests.

Then had the go ahead from them and after around 8 months of no success and periods seeming weird I went to the GP (October 23).

Hycosy was Feb 24, hysteroscopy and laparoscopy was April 24 and I've just had the follow up hysteroscopy two months later. Good luck with whatever you choose to do.
