Irregular periods, spotting and other symptoms since miscarriage

Hi everyone,
I just wondered if anyone has had a similar experience to me, or has any advice please?

I had a MMC at 8 weeks and an MVA back in April. My period returned after 3 weeks and I had 2 fairly normal cycles. But for the past 3 cycles I’ve had brown spotting for between 4 - 7 days before each period. I’ve also had uterus twinges fairly regularly throughout the month for the past few cycles. Not quite pain, but noticeable tenderness.

In addition, I used to have occasional dull period pain but since the miscarriage, the pain has been quite sharp, almost stinging. In the months I’ve had spotting, my pre-period symptoms (like period pain, headache, etc), don’t seem to line up with my actual period starting anymore - by the time it comes along, those symptoms have come and gone.

I’m 39 so I’m wondering if there’s any chance I could be perimenopausal, or if it’s just post miscarriage weirdness, or some other explanation. My GP took some swabs, but it turned out they were just for STDs and Candida, which all came back negative. They’ve also offered to send me for a scan, which I might request. We’re still TTC again, without any success so far, but I’d love to get to the bottom of this beforehand if possible.

Thanks for reading and I’m sorry for everyone here who’s had experience of miscarriage and loss ❤️

@Blueskies4 Thank you! It looks like my progesterone is actually ok - the test came back as 30.50 nmol/l, which says mid range (but think I read somewhere that anything less than 30 could be an issue). It did show raised Prolactin and low Testosterone, so I still think something isn't quite right. I now have a gynae appointment for July, so a bit of a wait.

The whole podcast series is really fascinating (@Esva1983, there's a Q&A one about low progesterone and a bunch of other stuff that was useful). I hadn't thought about the fact that some people might have always had low AMH, it's all a mystery.

All the best to both of you x

Greetings. I was 22 weeks when I miscarried, was taken to hospital for the removal of placenta and it was done by inserting a hand so painful. Given an arm injection. The given a peg prevention injection. 7 months after my miscarriage still no first period. I only had brown spotting at 6 months then again at 7 months I have brown with small blood and mucus spotting and it had been happening for four days now. I don't know weather should I be worried with my time frame of my first period and still not receiving a heavy flow. Please help

@Xolelwa I’m so very sorry for everything you’ve been through. That sounds incredibly tough, both mentally and physically, and I hope you’re doing ok, all things considered. I have no idea if it’s relevant, but have you heard of Asherman’s syndrome? Apparently if you have no or light periods after a miscarriage, it can be as a result of scarring to the uterus. Though with the mucus too, perhaps it’s an infection? I would definitely get checked out by a GP or gynaecologist, if you haven’t already x

I’m wondering if I have some form of scarring or inflammation too, as I have sharp intermittent pain during my cycle since the miscarriage and MVA, but I do have regular periods.

Sorry, jumping on this post. I had a mc at 7 weeks back in November. My periods where like clockwork same date every month. Since then they’ve been 35, 26, 32, 30 days. It’s now back to normal with this month being the first period to sync back to my same date pre pregnancy. And 6 months exactly since my mc. I didn’t have any D&C. But I guess hormones are outta whack for abit. Hopefully they return to normal for you x

Hi everyone, so an update from me.
I still haven't got results back from recurrent miscarriage clinic in regards to bloods and next steps.
We'd kind of got used to the fact that it wasn't going to be successful for us as I'm 41 now but I've actually fallen pregnant again. Not completely intentional tbh. So I started using the progesterone pessaries that I had leftover from last time after my positive test. I phoned EPU also for a prescription as recommended by my consultant and they booked me in for a 6 weeks scan. They did abdominal scan but I asked for a tv. To my shock there were twins! However one sac was tiny, no fetal pole. The other right on date with a heartbeat. Fast forward next scan in two weeks and I thought it was going to be another missed miscarriage as I'd had on and off spotting for 3 weeks and mild pain. But the one was spot on dates and heart beating. The other sac was slowly shrinking. I was really surprised as I just expected it to go wrong like the last 3 times.
Next scan is in two weeks. The last 3 have died around 8 weeks so this next scan will be the hurdle to beat. I know nothings guaranteed and got to get past 12 weeks for a more viable pregnancy on the cards so I'm taking it one scan at a time.
So the spotting I've been having hasn't impacted on my ability to get pregnant and maybe it was low progesterone and the pessaries are helping this time taking then earlier.
Last time I had to wait for a scan before they would give me any.

Any updates anyone?
Estelle

Wow, @Esva1983 what a rollercoaster of emotions for you. A huge congratulations on your pregnancy! I’m so sorry about the twin but fingers crossed for a healthy and successful little one. My missed miscarriage was around 8 and a bit weeks too, so totally understand how you’re feeling. I hope the next few weeks fly by and that you continue to get positive news at your scans. That’s great that you had progesterone on hand.

I don’t have too much of an update yet. I had an initial consultation with a private fertility clinic, who recommended IVF, but I’m unlikely to get even 3 eggs per cycle, and have about the same chance of conceiving naturally as with IVF (a depressing 5% chance!). So I think we’re going to try Letrozole, a trigger shot and progesterone for a few months, possibly with IUI. Though IUI doesn’t have a high success rate either.

But the clinic isn’t particularly interesting in doing any tests for the pelvic pain I’ve been getting, so I’ve booked a private gynaecology appointment, as my NHS referral keeps getting pushed back. I’m hoping I’ll find out more soon…

Hi @Rainbowsandpetticoats14, sorry, I missed your message first time around. I’m so sorry about your miscarriage and subsequent irregular periods. That’s great that they’ve now settled back down again. My irregular bleeding and spotting seems to have stopped too, though I’m still left with intermittent pelvic pain throughout my cycle, which I’m not sure is hormone related.

Best of luck with everything x

@Esva1983 congratulations, what a lovely news story xx

Blueskies4 · 07/05/2024 13:42

@Becky348 good luck with your current plan. We’ve put the breaks on for a couple of months whilst we have a couple of tests to make sure there’s no infection causing things, and also I’m planning to see a reproductive immunologist (I have two autoimmune conditions).. hoping the break helps!

Thanks @Blueskies4 you too - best of luck. Hope the immunologist route is useful and helps move things along for you (plus fingers crossed for no infection).

I've been prescribed a few cycles of letrozole and a monthly progesterone test to see if ovulation/progesterone are an issue for me, ahead of having an HSG test once my next progesterone test confirms I'm definitely ovulating. The HSG should confirm open fallopian tubes and might detect any uterus abnormalities, endo, adhesions, etc.

Hi everyone,

I'm needing some advice as this is my first time going through this. My doctors suspects I have PCOS due to my symptoms, along with family going through the same. I was only 6 weeks when I miscarried last year, this was in September. I didn’t get my first period till November which wasn’t to heavy, I got my second period in December but spotting in Jan, along with now I’m having spotting with sore breasts, nausea. Is this normal? Or is this something I should seek advice on?

I know a little to post, but I didn’t tell my family when it happened so I didn’t really have anywhere to go.
