Anyone had a D&C and/or Cervical Cauterisation?

Hi there - advice wanted please.....

I had a miscarriage last May 2007 and due to the doctors letting 'nature take its course' I bled for nearly 12 weeks and subsequently caught MRSA in the old blood that was left in my womb which was really difficult to treat and took ages to get rid of.

Since then I have had really long and heavy periods, and permanent vaginal discharge (loads and loads) and as as a result of this have had numerous tests at my GP's which haven't show anything significant.

Eventually. my GP referred me to a Gynaecologist who I saw last Friday who has told me that I need a D&C, Cervical Cauterisation, and to top it all off, a Cyst Removed.

I am absolutely scared stiff of what is going to happen and wondered if anyone else has been unfortunate enough to have had a similar experience/operations - I am especially worried about the Cervical Cauterisation as this sounds like a painful operation which takes ages to recover from.

Any advice would be most appreciated.

Thanks - Sarah xxxxx

Cant give you any advice but i do know how your feeling, i have had 3 miscarriages and i have had to have several scans because i have clots left over, and they aren't clearing themselves so i have been told i must see gynae too!! And i am rather scared to say the least, i had to have one of my fallopian tube removed because of an infection also..i have the same symptoms as you!!! I hope someone can give some advice here!!

I am so sorry that you are having problems too, it seems that these things become quite prolonged and that intervention is a last resort (in my case). Hope all goes well with the Gynae - at least you should be seeing someone who is a specialist soon and can actually sort things out rather than keep you guessing like my GP seems to have with me. Sounds like you've been through the mill sarah..hope someone pops in with some good advice for you..waiting for appointment for gynae atm hopefully won't be long, were your periods really painful also?

Hi sorry to hear you've gone through all this, Sarah. All I can say: D+C's can be done under general anaesthetic - and everything else you mentioned will certainly be done under that as far as I can tell (I'm not a medic, mind). Cauterisation when done in the nose for major nose bleeds involves literally freezing the bleeding bit "shut" so that it doesn't bleed any more. My feeling is that if you have the operation you will bleed for a week or so afterwards but then will feel a WHOLE lot better than you do now. At the moment your body is trying to sort all the infection/cyst out on its own and not succeeding.

Am aware this might not help - but hopefully a tiny little bit. Good luck and I hope someone else comes along with some more helpful stuff for you.

Really sorry to hear you're going through this and I hope it is all sorted soon.

I don't have much advice and I'm sure someone will be along soon to help you. About 10 years ago, I had a miscarriage at between 10 and 11 weeks. I had to have a D&C (it is a matter of course in South Africa, which is where we used to live). I had it done under GA in the morning and was at home by lunchtime. I don't know anything about CC though, sorry.

this link tells you about D&Cs

You may not bleed at all after D&C. I had a missed miscarriage and ERPC and had very little bleeding afterwards and some people have had none.

I had cervical cauterisation, Sarah, and I was awake for it. The worst thing was the injections to numb the cervix - local into the cervix. I went private, and it was fine, I had funny brown bleeding for a while, and I definately would have someone drive you home. I also have had a d and c, though not at the same time, and was knocked out for it. I bled for a few days, a bit sore and crampy for a while, but really nothing to get worried about.

You do sound like you have had an awful time recently, hope it gets better for you soon.

Take care

Thank you all so much for sharing your experiences and for your kind words.

I have found out that there is at least an 18 week wait for the operations so I can hopefully can get fully versed on the procedures by then.

I think that I will seek some support from my GP to explain things in greater depth to me as once I know exactly what will happen then hopefully I will feel better about having it all done.

Thanks again, Sarah xxx
