Help! Miscarriage at 6 weeks what to expect

SaveScrabulous · 24/02/2008 11:41

I started miscarrying last night which was expected as my HCG levels had dropped and a scan showed the preg wasn't viable.

I've had bleeding since last night getting heavier this morning, bad cramps this morning.
When are things going to start getting better?

I felt so weak when I got up this morning I could barely talk although now feel a bit better.

If you had a m/c atthe same kind of stage, how long did you bleed for and did it get less heavy after a day or two?

I'm so sorry to hear about this SaveScabulous. I had a m/c at 6 weeks at the beginning of this year. The bleeding started off light and I went for a scan which showed the embryo was far smaller then what it should have been. My HCG levels were also very low.

That night I had severe cramping an d lost large clots and string 'bits' but nothing identifiable as an embryo. The bleeding, clotting lasted for six days in total (it tailed off in this time and then restarted with a vengeance).

After six days it stopped completely. The doctor told me I didn't need a scan to confirm that it was all finished.

Because it is an early m/c, the chances are you hopefully won't have any complications and if you wish to, you should be able to start trying to concieve again as soon as the bleeding has stopped.

Get plenty of rest, take painkillers, and I promise, it does get easier.

sorry to hear this I had a m/c at 6 weeks in aug 2006 and my experience was very similar to belgo's. I bled for 6-7 days and had lots of clotting etc but nothing identifyable. I was told that my hormone levels were very low and that the embryo had failed to develop. It was painful and tiring but physically I recovered very quickly once the bleeding had stopped. Get lots of rest and take care of yourself. x

Thanks.
I think the pain and bleeding has tailed off a bit for now but it's useful to know it might get heavier again.

Not much chance of too much rest as have a 2 year old but dh is here today at least.

Trying again naturally after this isn't an issue as it was an IVF pregnancy and I can't get preg naturally. There's no way I can contemplate putting myself through IVF again for a little while if ever but I'm ok about that. I just want to get through the next few days and put this behind us.

Thanks for your advice - anyone else's experiences would be welcome.

The local EPU are a bit rubbish but my GP is going to refer me on as there were worries of an ectopic. Hopefully this m/c will resolve things.

ooh yuck I shouldn't have said things had tailed off...tmi so won't say anymore.
Is it normal for the bleeding to be quite sporadic then?

yes, savescrabulous, it is normal for bleeding to be sporadic. It may stop for a day or so, and then come back again.

I'm so sorry you're having to go through this, what a huge disappointment after IVF treatment

BumperliciousIsOneHotMother · 24/02/2008 13:47

I have no experience of m/c but just wanted to say I am really sorry. Look after yourself.

Nbg · 24/02/2008 13:56

Hi ss.
I'm so sorry your going through this.

I had a miscarriage around the same time.
Its started like a period and then i started to have contraction type pains which lasted about an hour.
The pain in that hour was more intense at one stage and I passed out.

But after that I just had a normal period for 4/5 days and felt fine and the month after I was pg with my dd

Get lots of rest and look after yourself.

I was sorry to hear about your bad news SaveScrabulous. I also had a 6 week miscarriage, which was a while ago now.

Just checking to see how your feeling now and if your bleeding has stopped?

Botbot · 29/02/2008 20:29

Sorry to hear about this.

I had an mc at 6 weeks. Same experience as everyone else, really - about a week of heavy bleeding and clots. Peaked on Day 6, then tailed off after that. For the first few days I took heavy painkillers and I found one of those microwave hot pillows helped too.

Emotionally, it affected me very badly. I was distraught and it took me about a year to feel brave enough to ttc again. I wish I'd known about MN at the time - it would have been nice to chat to people in the same boat.

Hope you feel better soon.

Hi
Checking back in.
Bleeding has pretty much stopped which is good.
I was referred to the local hospital by my gp earlier in the week as they were still worried about an ectopic and I had been dizzy. I spent 3.5 hours in A&E waiting to be seen and then when seen at midnight was admitted to the gynae ward overnight. All a horrid experience!

My 2nd pregnancy, at the 6 week mark, I got cramps, felt dizzy, pains in my stomach and I discharged heavy brown gunk!

I called my doc and they had a feel about, they thought it was eptopic and sent me to the hospital to get a scan.

I do remember the hospital saying, if anything did go wrong this time, keep trying for a baby, because the egg was being fertalised which was a good start.

Lucky the baby was still in my tummy and in the right place and nothing else happened after that. I had a good pregnancy and got a healthy 9lb2ozs baby.

Hope you get what you want too x

SaveScrabulous · 02/03/2008 10:48

I should have said - they confirmed it was a complete miscarriage so no hope there.

I can only get preg through IVF so the idea of keeping trying is a little different in this situation!
